Wike signals zero tolerance for negligence in FCT public service

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike has issued a firm warning to sanitation officials operating in the satellite towns, stressing that negligence will no longer be tolerated under his administration.

The warning followed observations of poor waste management around newly completed road projects, which the minister described as unacceptable given the scale of public investment involved.

Speaking during an extensive inspection tour of ongoing and completed road works, Wike made it clear that infrastructural progress must go hand in hand with responsibility.

He noted that the government’s efforts to rebuild and modernise roads across the territory would be undermined if basic environmental standards were ignored by those entrusted with maintaining public spaces.

The minister’s remarks were prompted by questions from journalists who observed refuse dumps along the recently reconstructed Orozo–Karshi Road.

The sight of waste along a critical transport corridor, according to the minister, reflected a failure of duty by sanitation supervisors and contractors responsible for keeping the environment clean.

Emphasising discipline and performance, Wike warned that officials who fail to meet expectations would face swift consequences.

He stated that any continued negligence observed beyond the set deadline would result in immediate termination of appointments, adding that government positions are not rewards but responsibilities that must be earned daily through service.

He explained that accountability remains a central pillar of the current administration’s approach to governance in the FCT.

According to him, development cannot be sustained where laxity is allowed to thrive, especially in areas directly affecting public health, safety, and the visual appeal of completed infrastructure.

Beyond sanitation concerns, the minister used the inspection tour to highlight the broader vision behind the widespread construction activities across the territory.

He disclosed that the ongoing projects are being executed in line with the directive of President Bola Tinubu, whose Renewed Hope agenda prioritises durable infrastructure as a foundation for economic growth and social stability.

Wike noted that previous administrations largely concentrated development efforts within the Abuja city centre, leaving many satellite towns with poor road networks and limited connectivity.

He said the current focus is deliberately aimed at correcting that imbalance by extending quality infrastructure to communities that have long been neglected.

During the visit to Karshi, the minister expressed satisfaction with the standard of work delivered by a Nigerian construction firm, Atufa Construction.

He stated that the company had successfully reconstructed all the major roads within the area, significantly improving movement, access to markets, and overall quality of life for residents.

He further revealed that in cases where contractors failed to meet performance expectations, decisive actions had been taken.

One such project, he explained, had its contract revoked and reassigned to SCC Construction Company, which has since returned to site and commenced work with renewed commitment.

Another major project inspected was the Bwari–Kubwa Road, described by the minister as a strategic corridor with significant economic importance.

He explained that the road serves as a vital link for commuters, traders, and residents, and its rehabilitation is expected to ease traffic congestion while stimulating commercial activities along the route.

According to Wike, infrastructure is not just about concrete and asphalt but about creating opportunities for people.

He stressed that improved roads reduce travel time, lower transportation costs, and enhance security, all of which contribute to stronger local economies in satellite communities.

The minister assured residents that the government remains committed to completing all awarded projects to acceptable standards and within reasonable timelines.

He urged contractors and supervising agencies to maintain professionalism, warning that excuses would not be accepted where public funds and safety are concerned.

As the inspection tour concluded, the message from the FCT administration was clear: development and accountability must move together.

With firm oversight and a renewed focus on satellite towns, the government aims to deliver infrastructure that is not only functional but sustainable, clean, and beneficial to all residents of the Federal Capital Territory.
