Former Super Eagles defender Ben Iroha has expressed optimism that the Super Eagles and AFCON 2026 campaign can be a historic success, citing squad depth, international experience, and quality as key ingredients.
Iroha’s confidence comes from years of involvement with Nigeria’s national team, both as a player and as a mentor to young talents.
Iroha, who lifted the AFCON trophy with Nigeria in 1994, spoke exclusively to Completesports.com from his base in Texas, United States. “I’ve gone through the provisional squad list released by Coach Eric Sékou Chelle, and the quality is impressive. With proper preparation, the Super Eagles and AFCON 2026 mission is achievable,” he said.
He noted that the 54-man provisional list is packed with European-based players, with only a few stars still active in the domestic NPFL.
“This exposure to top leagues across Europe provides the tactical awareness and mental toughness needed for success in Morocco. These players have faced the best in the world, and that experience will be invaluable.”
While the talent pool is impressive, Iroha emphasized that winning the tournament requires more than individual skill. “The players must understand each other, follow tactical instructions, and remain disciplined on and off the pitch. Preparation is as important as talent. A team can have the best players, but without cohesion, success is unlikely.”
