Security operatives have arrested suspects linked to the killing of three Ondo farmers during a midnight Amotekun and NSCDC joint raid in Akure North.
Security operatives have captured several suspects believed to be responsible for the brutal killing of three Ondo farmers in Ala, Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The suspects were apprehended during a high-risk overnight raid coordinated by the Amotekun Corps and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The operation, which began late Monday and extended into the early hours of Tuesday, November 4, 2025, took place deep inside the forest where the suspects had been hiding after allegedly murdering the Ondo farmers.
Witnesses say the attackers had disguised themselves in army camouflage to evade detection and create panic within the rural community.
Images circulating on social media showed the arrested men, handcuffed and being escorted into an Amotekun security van. The photographs quickly went viral, drawing widespread relief from residents who had lived in fear since the killings.
A senior security operative who spoke anonymously confirmed the arrest and revealed that the suspects are now in custody for interrogation.
According to him, the authorities have intensified surveillance across Akure North to prevent any reprisal attacks and ensure peace returns to the affected area.
“The suspects are now being interrogated, and investigations have begun in earnest,” the source said.
“Security patrols have been increased across all neighboring communities to restore public confidence and guarantee safety for Ondo farmers.”
The Southern Nigeria Youth Congress (SNYC) had earlier condemned the attacks, describing them as senseless and barbaric.
The youth group lamented that the killings of innocent Ondo farmers exposed the vulnerability of rural communities despite repeated promises from security agencies to protect them.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Afe Adegboyega, the group decried the murder of three local farmers in Ala, located in the Igbatoro area of Akure North. Adegboyega described the crime as “a painful reminder of the insecurity that still threatens food production and rural livelihoods.”
“The killing of hardworking Ondo farmers is heart-wrenching and unacceptable,” he said. “It is distressing that those who feed the nation are being targeted by criminals while we watch helplessly.”
He further noted that the continued attacks on farmers could worsen food scarcity and inflation across the country if urgent measures are not taken to protect agricultural workers.
The SNYC called on the state and federal governments to strengthen coordination among security agencies and improve intelligence gathering to dismantle bandit networks operating within Ondo forests.
The group also urged local communities to cooperate with the Amotekun Corps by providing timely information about suspicious movements or individuals.
“Our farmers are the backbone of our food system,” Adegboyega added.
“When they can no longer go to their farms without fear, our survival as a nation is endangered. The time to act is now before insecurity consumes more lives.”
Residents of Ala and nearby communities have expressed relief and appreciation following the arrests. Many praised the swift response of the security operatives, describing it as a positive step toward restoring normalcy and deterring further attacks.
A local farmer who spoke under anonymity said the incident had forced many to abandon their farmlands temporarily for safety.
“We are grateful for this breakthrough,” he said.
“Now that the suspected killers of our brothers have been arrested, we hope justice will be served and peace will return.”
Community leaders have also called for more permanent security posts in the area to ensure that farmers can resume work without fear of violence.
Some have appealed to the state government to provide psychological and financial support to the affected families.
The Commander of the Amotekun Corps in Ondo State confirmed the arrests, noting that his men acted on credible intelligence. He assured the public that the corps remains committed to protecting lives and property, particularly in rural areas prone to attacks.
“This operation is a message to all criminals there is no hiding place in Ondo State,” the commander said.
“Anyone threatening the peace of our people, especially Ondo farmers, will be tracked and apprehended.”
Meanwhile, sources within the state government revealed that Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has been briefed on the situation.
The government is reportedly planning to introduce new community-based surveillance programs in partnership with traditional rulers and local security networks to tackle rural insecurity more effectively.
The killing of Ondo farmers has reignited national concern about rural insecurity and its implications for Nigeria’s food security.
Analysts warn that unchecked attacks on farming communities could worsen hunger and economic hardship, given the central role of agriculture in Nigeria’s economy.
Experts have called for the modernization of rural policing through drones, satellite surveillance, and rapid-response units capable of reaching remote areas swiftly.
They also stress the need for economic empowerment of young people to reduce their susceptibility to recruitment by criminal gangs.
For many residents of Akure North, the recent arrests symbolize a turning point in the battle against banditry. However, they insist that the real victory will come only when justice is served and long-term peace is achieved.
“We are hopeful but cautious,” a local youth leader said.
“The arrest is good, but the government must ensure these suspected killers are prosecuted, not released. Only then will our Ondo farmers feel truly protected.”
