The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed a major WAFCON expansion, increasing the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations from 12 to 16 teams starting in 2026.
CAF President Patrice Motsepe said, “This expansion reflects our commitment to grow women’s football and create opportunities for more nations to compete at the continental level.”
The 2026 edition will be hosted by Morocco, with matches scheduled from March 17 to April 3, providing a platform for African women footballers to shine internationally.
“This is a historic moment,” stated Nigeria captain Asisat Oshoala. “More teams mean more competition and more chances for young players to showcase their talent.”
Twelve teams have already qualified automatically, including defending champions Nigeria, while four additional teams will join based on FIFA Women’s World Rankings of eliminated nations.
The four nations benefiting are Cameroon (66th), Côte d’Ivoire (71st), Mali (79th), and Egypt (95th), ensuring a broader representation of African football styles and cultures.
