Victor Osimhen injury: Galatasaray confirm knee surgery as Super Eagles face AFCON qualifying setback

The Victor Osimhen injury has raised fresh concerns for Nigeria’s Super Eagles after Galatasaray confirmed that the striker will undergo surgery on his left knee, putting his availability for the upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Tanzania in doubt.

The Turkish champions announced on Friday that the 27-year-old sustained a knee strain during Tuesday’s UEFA Champions League encounter against German side VfB Stuttgart.

Medical examinations carried out after the match, including an MRI scan, reportedly revealed a loose fragment in Osimhen’s left knee. The discovery prompted Galatasaray’s medical team to recommend surgery.

The club confirmed that the Nigerian international was scheduled to undergo an arthroscopic procedure on Saturday at Maslak Acıbadem Hospital, with team doctor Yener İnce overseeing the operation.

In its official statement, Galatasaray explained the circumstances surrounding the injury and confirmed that Osimhen would miss the club’s next fixture.

“Our player Victor Osimhen suffered a strain in his left knee during our UEFA Champions League match against VfB Stuttgart, and an MRI scan revealed a loose fragment,” the club announced.

“Arthroscopic knee surgery is scheduled to be performed on him tomorrow at Maslak Acıbadem Hospital by our club doctor, Yener İnce. Our player has therefore been removed from the squad for tomorrow’s match against Amed S. F.”

The announcement means Osimhen will miss Saturday’s domestic encounter against Amed Sportif Faaliyetler as he prepares for the operation.

Although Galatasaray have not provided a definite recovery period, the outcome of the procedure is expected to offer a clearer indication of how long the striker could remain unavailable.

For Nigeria, however, the immediate concern is whether the prolific forward will recover sufficiently to feature in the Super Eagles’ forthcoming international assignments.

Osimhen injury raises concern ahead of Nigeria’s Tanzania fixtures

The Victor Osimhen injury represents a significant concern for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who is preparing his team for two important 2027 AFCON qualifying matches against Tanzania.

Nigeria will welcome the Taifa Stars to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on Friday, November 13, before travelling to Dar es Salaam for the return encounter four days later.

The two matches will test Nigeria’s attacking strength, particularly if Osimhen is unable to recover in time to participate.

The former Napoli striker remains one of the most important players in the national team, offering goals, physical presence, movement and experience against difficult opponents.

His absence would therefore leave Chelle with the task of adjusting his attacking options and identifying a suitable alternative for the Tanzania double-header.

The Super Eagles will be hoping that the operation is successful and that the recovery process does not extend beyond the period required for the upcoming qualifiers.

However, until Galatasaray provide a medical update and a clearer recovery timeline, Nigeria cannot be certain whether their leading striker will be available.

Another fitness setback for the Super Eagles striker

The latest development is particularly frustrating because Osimhen has already experienced fitness difficulties during Nigeria’s current qualifying campaign.

He missed the Super Eagles’ opening two matches against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau in September after initially being included in Chelle’s squad.

The striker subsequently withdrew after failing to recover from a muscle injury sustained during Galatasaray’s 3-2 victory over Istanbul Basaksehir on September 4.

That earlier setback prevented him from helping Nigeria begin the qualification campaign on the pitch, forcing the coaching crew to work without one of its most influential attacking players.

His latest knee problem has now created another period of uncertainty, with the national team facing the possibility of losing him for a second consecutive international window.

The timing is also significant because the Super Eagles are approaching a demanding stage of the campaign, when consistency and the availability of key players could prove decisive.

Galatasaray await outcome of arthroscopic procedure

Galatasaray’s decision to proceed with arthroscopic knee surgery followed the MRI findings that revealed a loose fragment in Osimhen’s left knee.

The procedure is intended to address the problem identified during the medical assessment, although the club has not disclosed further details about the nature or extent of the fragment.

The operation was scheduled to take place at Maslak Acıbadem Hospital under the supervision of Yener İnce, the club’s team doctor.

The Turkish side will be expected to monitor Osimhen’s progress after the procedure before determining when he can resume rehabilitation and eventually return to competitive action.

For the Nigerian striker, a successful operation and carefully managed recovery will be important, particularly after the muscle problem that disrupted his participation in September.

Galatasaray will also want him to regain full fitness without rushing his return, given his importance to the club’s domestic and European ambitions.

The Victor Osimhen injury therefore presents a challenge for both Galatasaray and Nigeria, although the immediate priority will be the player’s recovery.

Nigeria’s AFCON qualification campaign continues

Nigeria are drawn in Group L alongside Tanzania, Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau in the race for places at the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.

Tanzania have already secured automatic qualification as one of the tournament’s three co-hosts, alongside Kenya and Uganda.

Their qualification means the remaining countries in the group are competing for the available places at the continental competition.

The Super Eagles will consequently be determined to collect positive results against Tanzania as they continue their campaign.

Playing the first fixture in Uyo offers Nigeria an opportunity to make home advantage count before travelling to Tanzania for the return match.

However, Chelle’s preparations could become more complicated if Osimhen is ruled out for both encounters.

The coach will have to assess the available forwards and decide how best to maintain Nigeria’s attacking threat should the Galatasaray striker be unavailable.

For now, attention remains on the outcome of Osimhen’s surgery and the medical assessment that will follow.

Nigeria will be hoping for positive news, but the final decision on his involvement in the Tanzania fixtures will depend on his recovery and the medical advice available to the national team.
