Oyo mining regulation enforcement intensifies as the state government suspends the Sobaloju of Ofiki over alleged illegal mining and forest reserve violations.
The Oyo State Government has taken a decisive step in strengthening its control over natural resources with the suspension of the Sobaloju of Ofiki, Chief Jacob Adefabi Sobaloju, following allegations linked to breaches of mining regulations and encroachment on protected public lands.

According to official sources within the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, the suspension became effective on Monday, January 5, 2026.
Authorities described the action as a preventive measure intended to ensure a fair and unhindered investigation into allegations of misconduct involving mining activities within the state.
At the centre of the controversy are claims that the traditional ruler violated Oyo State Executive Order 001/2023, a legal framework established to regulate Oyo mining activities, prevent environmental degradation, and protect state-owned assets from illegal exploitation.
The order clearly outlines approval processes for mining operations and restricts access to gazetted forest reserves without express government consent.
In a letter signed by the Director of Chieftaincy Matters, Mr. Olajire A. M., Chief Sobaloju was accused of issuing consent letters to mining operators without lawful authority.
The letter further alleged that such actions enabled unauthorised miners to operate within government-reserved forests, areas specifically protected under state environmental and forestry regulations.
The government noted that these alleged activities, if proven, pose serious risks to environmental sustainability, public safety, and revenue generation.
Officials emphasized that unregulated Oyo mining operations often result in deforestation, land degradation, and loss of state revenue, making strict enforcement of existing laws non-negotiable.
As part of the disciplinary action, the Sobaloju has been suspended from performing duties at the palace of the Onito of Ito pending the conclusion of investigations.
The state government clarified that the suspension does not amount to a final verdict but is intended to preserve the integrity of the investigative process and prevent possible interference.
The letter formally titled “Re: Complaint against Chief Sobaloju of Ofiki for violation of State Executive Order, Forest Reserve Regulations and encouraging trespassing of government gazetted assets” outlined the government’s concerns in detail.
It stated that the allegations include facilitating illegal access to protected lands and undermining state authority over regulated Oyo mining zones.
Beyond the suspension, Chief Sobaloju has been directed to immediately cease all involvement in mining-related matters.
This includes refraining from issuing any form of consent letters, approvals, or endorsements to mining companies or individuals.
He was also warned against obstructing the investigation or influencing witnesses connected to the case.
Furthermore, the traditional ruler has been instructed to make himself fully available to investigators whenever required.
