Baasi kidnapping: Escaped victim identifies suspect, leading to arrest in Oyo

Baasi kidnapping has raised fresh security concerns in Atisbo Local Government Area of Oyo State after an escaped victim reportedly identified one of the suspected abductors, leading to his arrest by local security operatives.

The suspect, identified as Dogo of Gaa Alhaji in Baasi, was apprehended following a joint operation involving vigilante members, Amotekun, Iru Ekun and local hunters.

The arrest followed the escape of a kidnapping victim who had reportedly spent days in the hands of his abductors before managing to regain his freedom.

According to reports files in by Kazeem Jenrade, the victim recognized one of the alleged kidnappers and provided information that helped security operatives identify and apprehend the suspect.

The victim is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital following his escape from the kidnappers’ hideout.

The development has drawn attention to the security challenges facing Baasi, where residents have reportedly experienced a series of kidnapping incidents in recent times.

Baasi Kidnapping Suspect Handed Over to Police

The Onibaasi of Baasi, Oba Dr Sunday Azeez Babatunde Asunmo, confirmed the arrest, explaining that the escaped victim was able to recognise one of the alleged abductors.

According to the monarch, the suspect reportedly resides within the same community as the victim, whose identification helped security operatives track him down.

Following the operation, the monarch handed the suspect over to the police in Atisbo Local Government Area for further investigation and interrogation.

The suspect’s arrest followed cooperation among community stakeholders and local security groups, who acted on the information provided by the victim.

The authorities are expected to investigate the allegations and establish whether the suspect was involved in the reported abduction or other kidnapping incidents in the area.

The suspect remains an alleged offender, and the allegations against him have not been established by a court.

Atisbo Chairman Confirms Arrest Amid Rising Kidnapping Concerns

The Chairman of Atisbo Local Government Council, Hon. Bashiru Alade Muyiwa, also confirmed the incident and explained the role played by security operatives in apprehending the suspect.

Alade expressed concern over repeated kidnapping incidents in Baasi, noting that the situation had strengthened calls for improved security arrangements within the community.

The council chairman said reports of kidnapping incidents informed the state government’s decision to fast-track the establishment of a police security post in Baasi.

According to him, the recently commissioned police post is intended to strengthen security operations and improve the response to criminal activities in the area.

The establishment of the facility is expected to support efforts to protect residents, discourage criminal activities and improve coordination between the police and community-based security groups.

The chairman’s comments underline the importance of strengthening security infrastructure in communities that have experienced repeated abductions.

Residents Urged to Report Suspicious Activities

Alade urged residents of Baasi and the wider Atisbo Local Government Area to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements or activities to the police and other relevant security agencies.

He specifically warned members of the public against taking the law into their own hands, stressing the need to allow the police to conduct a proper investigation.

The chairman also commended the Onibaasi of Baasi and residents of the community for their cooperation with security operatives during efforts to apprehend the suspect.

He extended his commendation to the wider Atisbo community, encouraging continued collaboration between residents, traditional institutions and security agencies.

Community cooperation can assist investigations by helping authorities obtain relevant information about suspected criminal activities. However, any allegation must be verified through lawful investigative procedures.

Baasi Kidnapping Raises Calls for Stronger Community Security

The latest incident has renewed attention on kidnapping in Atisbo and the need for sustained security measures to protect residents of Baasi and surrounding communities.

The victim’s reported escape and identification of a suspected abductor provided information that security operatives used in making the arrest.

The involvement of local vigilantes, Amotekun, Iru Ekun and local hunters also demonstrates the role community-based security groups can play in supporting law enforcement efforts.

Nevertheless, the effectiveness of such operations depends on proper coordination, reliable information and the ability of the police to investigate allegations and pursue any necessary legal action.

Residents have been encouraged to share credible information with security agencies rather than confront suspected criminals themselves.

The police investigation is expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the victim’s abduction and determine whether further action is warranted against the arrested suspect.
