Olubadan becomes new Oyo State Council of Obas Chairman

The Olubadan of Ibadanland has officially assumed the role of Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas, ushering in a new era in traditional leadership. This historic appointment reflects a major shift in the state’s traditional power dynamics, as leadership of the Council once largely associated with the Alaafin of Oyo  now operates under a rotational system.

Governor Seyi Makinde, during the inauguration today, 15th January 2026, emphasised that the rotational model ensures equity and inclusivity among Oyo State’s major monarchies. The Olubadan will serve a fixed term, after which leadership will rotate to the Alaafin of Oyo and the Soun of Ogbomosoland, ensuring that no single throne permanently dominates the Council.

Understanding the rotational chairmanship system

Previously, the Alaafin of Oyo was widely seen as the de facto leader of the Oyo State Council of Obas. However, legislative debates in 2025 led to the creation of a rotational leadership law, designed to balance authority among the state’s three most influential monarchs.

This system recognizes Ibadan’s historical, cultural, and economic significance, while maintaining the Alaafin’s symbolic prominence. The Olubadan’s current chairmanship is a tangible reflection of shared custodianship of traditional authority in modern governance.

Significance for Oyo State and Yorubaland

For Ibadan, this moment represents historic recognition. While the Alaafin of Oyo has traditionally held higher prestige, the Olubadan’s chairmanship signals a more equitable approach to traditional leadership.
Observers note that this development is also a lesson in modernizing traditional institutions without eroding their cultural relevance. By codifying rotational leadership, Oyo State ensures that tradition and democratic principles coexist, setting a precedent for other regions in Nigeria with influential monarchies.

Reactions from leaders and traditional stakeholders

The Olubadan’s appointment has been widely welcomed, with supporters highlighting the inclusivity and fairness of the rotational system. Some traditionalists continue to debate the implications for the historical hierarchy, but the general consensus emphasizes unity and collaboration among Oyo’s monarchs.

Governor Makinde stated that the move reflects modern governance principles grounded in equity, while local political analysts suggest it may help reduce historical tensions between the Alaafin’s and Olubadan’s spheres of influence.

Just a few days ago, Ibadan traditional stakeholders, including monarchs, Mogajis, and Baales, have warned the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, to stop disrespecting the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abdulrashidi Adewolu Ladoja. This warning follows an incident where the Alaafin reportedly stretched out his hand while seated to greet the Olubadan at an event, which was seen as a gross insult. The stakeholders emphasized that the Olubadan, being an 82-year-old former governor and senator, deserves respect and that any further disrespect would be met with strong resistance from Ibadan traditional authorities

Also, a controversy erupted in Oyo State, Nigeria, when Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Abdulrashidi Adewolu Ladoja, snubbed Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, at an inter-faith gathering in Ibadan on Monday, January 12, 2026. The incident sparked a heated debate over Yoruba traditional hierarchy and protocol, with some accusing the Alaafin of overstepping boundaries and others condemning the Olubadan’s response as disrespectful.

The snub has raised questions about tradition, modernization, and etiquette within Yoruba traditional systems, and community leaders are urging restraint and dialogue to resolve the issue. However, the Alaafin was absent at today’s ceremony of the Olubadan of Ibadanland officially assuming the role of Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas,

The Olubadan as Chairman of the Oyo State Council of Obas marks a transformative moment in Oyo State’s cultural and political history. While the Alaafin of Oyo retains historical significance, the rotational system institutionalizes shared leadership, ensuring fairness and recognition for Ibadan and Ogbomosoland.

This development is a reminder that tradition can evolve alongside modern governance, creating a more inclusive and balanced leadership structure for the Yoruba heartland.
