NSCDC launches probe after officer dies during tragic palliative event

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has initiated a comprehensive investigation following the death of one of its personnel during a Ramadan and Sallah relief distribution exercise in Tudun Wada Local Government Area of Kano State.

The unfortunate incident occurred during a palliative programme organised to support vulnerable residents within the constituency.

The relief distribution was facilitated by Alhassan Ado Doguwa, the lawmaker representing Doguwa/Tudun Wada Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.

The event, which was intended to provide assistance to community members ahead of the festive period, reportedly became tense when a disturbance broke out at the venue.

According to early accounts, a group of individuals allegedly attempted to disrupt the exercise.

The resulting commotion created a chaotic atmosphere, leading to the tragic loss of the security officer assigned to maintain order at the scene.

Authorities have not yet released full details regarding the exact circumstances of the incident, pending the outcome of ongoing inquiries.

Confirming the development, the Kano State Command of the NSCDC stated that it had commenced a thorough examination of the matter.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer explained that the State Commandant ordered a detailed review immediately after receiving reports of the officer’s death.

He assured that the investigation would carefully examine all factors that contributed to the incident.

The command further noted that an official statement would be issued once the review process is concluded.

According to the spokesperson, transparency remains a priority, and the findings will help clarify what transpired during the palliative distribution exercise.

The leadership emphasized that the welfare and safety of personnel remain central to its operational responsibilities.

In response to the tragic event, the lawmaker expressed shock and sadness over the loss of life.

He described the incident as deeply regrettable and extended condolences to the management and staff of NSCDC, as well as to the family of the deceased officer and residents of Tudun Wada.

He explained that he had been informed about the disturbance at the distribution centre and the unfortunate consequences that followed.

While acknowledging that tensions may have arisen during the exercise, he maintained that the primary goal of the programme was to provide humanitarian support to constituents.

He stressed that no relief activity should result in violence or loss of life.

Community members in the area also expressed concern about the incident, urging authorities to ensure that similar programmes are conducted with improved security arrangements.

Some residents called for stronger coordination between organisers and security agencies to prevent overcrowding and maintain order during public distributions.

The NSCDC reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public spaces and protecting lives and property.

Officials explained that the ongoing investigation aims not only to determine the immediate cause of the incident but also to identify preventive measures that could reduce the risk of future occurrences.

The corps emphasized that lessons drawn from the inquiry would guide operational improvements.

Security analysts note that palliative distributions, while beneficial, often attract large crowds, which can create challenges for crowd control.

They recommend advance planning, clear communication, and adequate deployment of personnel to manage such gatherings effectively.

Ensuring proper entry and exit points, as well as coordinating with local authorities, may also help reduce tension during similar events.

The lawmaker further appealed to members of the public to avoid spreading unverified claims or misinformation regarding the circumstances of the officer’s death.

He urged individuals to allow investigators to complete their work and to rely only on official updates.

According to him, premature conclusions could complicate efforts to establish the truth.

Meanwhile, the Kano State Command assured that the welfare of its officers remains a top priority.

The command expressed sympathy to the bereaved family and pledged continued support during this difficult period. It also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining professionalism in the discharge of its duties.

As the investigation progresses, stakeholders await further clarification on the events that led to the tragic outcome.

The findings are expected to provide insight into what went wrong and how similar incidents can be prevented in the future.

The leadership of NSCDC concluded by assuring the public that accountability and diligence will guide the inquiry.

Officials stated that once all facts are gathered and reviewed, appropriate actions will follow in line with established procedures.

The incident has sparked renewed discussions about safety measures at public welfare events across the state.
