Lekki expressway accident kills four passengers

A tragic Lekki Expressway accident over the weekend claimed the lives of four passengers and left four others severely injured after a commercial minibus collided with a heavy-duty truck along the busy Lagos highway.

The fatal incident occurred opposite Beechwood Estate in the Shapati area, inward Ajah, a rapidly developing corridor along the Lekki–Epe Expressway.

The accident triggered a swift emergency response from traffic officials and rescue teams who rushed to the scene to assist victims and restore order to the area.

Authorities confirmed that the crash involved a HOWO articulated truck with registration number KNN 313 YL and a Suzuki commercial minibus popularly known among commuters as “Korope.”

The smaller vehicle was reportedly transporting passengers along the route when the collision occurred.

Preliminary investigations into the Lekki Expressway accident indicate that the truck driver may have lost control of the vehicle while it was moving at speed.

Witnesses at the scene reported that the truck suddenly veered off its lane and crossed into the opposite side of the carriageway, where it rammed into the oncoming commercial bus carrying passengers.

The impact of the crash was devastating. The commercial minibus was badly damaged as the heavy truck struck it head-on.

Four male passengers inside the vehicle died instantly due to the force of the collision.

Meanwhile, four other occupants of the bus—two men and two women—sustained serious injuries.

Rescue officials reported that the victims were trapped inside the mangled remains of the minibus and required urgent extraction before they could receive medical attention.

Officials of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority were among the first responders at the accident scene.

Traffic officers quickly coordinated with other emergency personnel and concerned residents to begin rescue operations.

According to reports, the responders worked carefully to remove the trapped passengers from the wreckage of the damaged vehicle. The process required patience and coordination to prevent further injuries to the victims.

The injured survivors of the Lekki Expressway accident were immediately transported to Hamon Royal Hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Medical personnel at the hospital reportedly began emergency care upon their arrival as the victims suffered fractures and other severe injuries.

Sadly, the four deceased passengers could not be revived. Their bodies were later evacuated from the crash site by officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, who transported them to the morgue at Shency Hospital using an ambulance.

Reacting to the tragic development, the General Manager of LASTMA, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sadness over the loss of lives.

Lekki Expressway Accident

He extended condolences to the families of the deceased victims and sympathised with those injured in the crash.

Bakare-Oki also commended the prompt response of traffic officers and other rescue personnel who participated in the emergency operation.

He explained that traffic officials arrived quickly after the Lekki Expressway accident was reported and worked tirelessly alongside other agencies to assist the victims and manage the situation.

Security officers from the Nigeria Police Force, particularly personnel attached to the Elemoro Police Division, were also present at the scene.

The officers helped secure the area, control the crowd that gathered around the accident site, and ensure that rescue operations proceeded without disruption.

Their presence also helped prevent secondary accidents along the busy expressway, which often experiences heavy vehicular movement, especially during weekends.

The Lekki Expressway accident once again highlights the growing concerns over road safety along the Lekki–Epe corridor.

Over the years, the highway has witnessed a significant increase in traffic due to rapid urban expansion and the development of residential estates, businesses, and commercial centres in the area.

With thousands of commuters using the road daily, traffic authorities have repeatedly warned motorists to observe safety regulations, avoid reckless driving, and ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before embarking on journeys.

Road safety experts say many accidents involving articulated trucks are often linked to excessive speed, mechanical faults, driver fatigue, or poor lane discipline.

Authorities have therefore urged drivers, especially operators of heavy-duty vehicles, to exercise greater caution when navigating busy urban highways such as the Lekki–Epe Expressway.

Meanwhile, investigations are expected to continue to determine the exact circumstances that caused the Lekki Expressway accident and whether negligence or mechanical failure played a role in the tragedy.

Traffic officials say the findings may help guide future road safety measures aimed at reducing accidents and protecting commuters who rely on the busy Lagos highway every day.
