The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has launched a formal investigation into allegations made by Nigerian rapper Oladipupo Olabode Oladimeji, popularly known as Oladips, who claimed that officials of the anti-graft agency extorted ₦10 million from him during his detention in November 2024.
The rapper, known for his raw lyrical storytelling and strong street following, revealed in a recent podcast interview that his experience with the EFCC left him traumatized.
He alleged that despite spending five days in custody, he was neither charged nor found guilty of any offence but was compelled to pay a hefty amount before his release.
According to him, “I was detained for five days with no solid evidence against me.
They took my phones, went through everything, and found nothing incriminating.
Yet, I had to pay ₦10 million to regain my freedom.”
Oladips also described the conditions at the EFCC holding facility as “deplorable,” claiming detainees were “packed like sardines” and subjected to poor-quality meals.
His revelations sparked widespread debate on social media, drawing attention to alleged misconduct within Nigeria’s foremost anti-corruption agency.
EFCC Probes Oladips Allegations, Summons Officers Involved
In a swift response, the EFCC announced that it had commenced an internal probe into the allegations made by the rapper.
According to the Commission, all operatives implicated in the case have been summoned to its headquarters in Abuja and relieved of their operational duties pending the outcome of the investigation.
A statement released by the Commission’s spokesperson stressed that the EFCC “views with great seriousness” any accusation that threatens its integrity.
“The Commission has seen the claims made by the hip-hop artist Oladipupo Olabode Oladimeji, a.k.a. Oladips, alleging that EFCC operatives extorted ₦10 million from him during his detention. We have initiated a thorough investigation into this matter,” the statement read.
The EFCC further reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on corruption and internal misconduct, assuring Nigerians that any officer found guilty of wrongdoing would face disciplinary action.
“The officers in the team that handled the case have been relieved of their duties pending investigation.
The EFCC is guided by integrity, professionalism, and accountability. Should the allegations prove true, the Commission will take appropriate measures.
However, if the claims are found to be false or intended to malign the institution, necessary sanctions will also follow,” the agency stated.

If the EFCC wants to maintain public trust, it must ensure that justice is not only done but seen to be done,” he stated.
Several civil rights organizations have also called for the EFCC to conduct an independent, transparent probe to ensure the matter is handled fairly.
