Chris Brown pleads guilty to affray after Mayfair nightclub incident

Chris Brown pleads guilty to affray at Southwark Crown Court over a 2023 confrontation at Tape, a Mayfair private members’ club. The R&B star waved to fans before entering court.

The 37-year-old faced more serious charges linked to a bottle attack. Prosecutors dropped assault and weapons charges after he admitted the public order offence on Friday.

Bottle Attack At Tape Club In 2023

The incident happened on the dancefloor of Tape in Mayfair. Brown was accused of hitting former friend Abraham Diaw twice over the head with a glass bottle.

Prosecutors told the court that Brown struck Diaw before his vocal coach joined in. The victim was later kicked while on the floor, according to the CPS.

Diaw was taken to St Mary’s Hospital with head and knee injuries. The attack was described as “vicious and unprovoked” in a crowded venue.

Charges Dropped As Affray Admitted

More serious counts were dropped on Friday. The charge of assault occasioning actual bodily harm was withdrawn, along with two weapons charges.

A count of attempting to cause grievous bodily harm was also dropped. Brown will now be sentenced only for affray, a charge relating to fighting in public.

His vocal coach, Omololu Akinlolu, 40, also pleaded guilty to affray. Akinlolu had previously denied assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

Prosecutors Condemn Nightclub Violence

Claire Campbell, Senior Crown Prosecutor for CPS London South, issued a strong statement after the hearing. She said the attack had no place in public life.

“This was a vicious and unprovoked attack by Brown and Akinlolu in a crowded nightclub where Brown used a glass bottle as a weapon to strike the victim’s head twice,” Campbell said.

“This kind of violence is entirely unacceptable,” she added. “The Crown Prosecution Service will work tirelessly to pursue cases like this and prove that no one is above the law.”

The CPS said it worked with the Met Police to build the case over two years. Evidence included CCTV from inside Tape and witness statements.

Court Appearance And Bail Conditions

Brown arrived at Southwark Crown Court in a tan suit, gold-rimmed sunglasses and a St Louis Cardinals baseball cap. Security flanked him as fans gathered outside.

He was released on bail again on Friday. At earlier hearings, the judge ordered a £5 million security fee as part of bail conditions.

The court also allowed him to tour internationally. He had to surrender his passport on arrival in each country and return it before leaving.

Akinlolu left court alongside Brown. Both men spoke briefly to lawyers before departing without further comment to media.

Sentencing Set For October

Judge set sentencing for 26 October at Southwark Crown Court. Both Brown and Akinlolu face the affray charge only.

Affray carries a maximum sentence of three years. Guidelines consider injury, use of a weapon and public location as aggravating factors.

Legal analysts expect the court to weigh Brown’s guilty plea and lack of further UK offences. His international touring schedule may also be considered.

The victim, Abraham Diaw, did not attend Friday’s hearing. His legal team said he would provide a statement before sentencing.

Career Impact And Public Reaction

Brown has continued to tour despite the case. The bail arrangement let him complete a world tour while the UK proceedings were ongoing.

Fans outside court cheered and filmed on phones. Some held signs supporting the singer, while others criticised the violence.

Social media reaction was split. Some argued the plea shows accountability, others said dropping serious charges sends the wrong message.

The case has reignited debate about celebrity conduct in London nightlife. Mayfair clubs have faced pressure to improve security after high-profile incidents.

What Happens Next

Until October, both defendants remain on bail. Conditions include not contacting Diaw and attending all court dates.

The court will hear impact statements and mitigation before deciding sentence. Probation officers are preparing pre-sentence reports.

Brown’s team said he “accepts responsibility for his actions that night.” They declined to comment further ahead of sentencing.

The Tape club has not issued a new statement. It previously cooperated with police and provided footage to investigators.

Broader Context

London prosecutors have increased focus on bottle attacks and glass violence in nightlife zones. The CPS says such incidents cause serious harm.

This case adds to a list of celebrity court appearances at Southwark. The court handles many serious crime trials for central London.

For Brown, the plea closes one chapter but leaves legal uncertainty. A conviction could affect future UK visas and performance permits.

The music industry is watching closely. Promoters have already adjusted insurance and security for his upcoming dates.

In court, the message was clear. Fame does not exempt anyone from the law, prosecutors said. Sentencing in October will decide the final outcome.
