Five people have reportedly died in a road accident involving a vehicle attached to the convoy of Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, along the Minna–Bida Road in Minna, the state capital.

The victims included four male students and a young woman identified as Mrs Nafisa, who was reportedly driving a private Peugeot 206 car that collided head-on with a Hilux vehicle in the governor’s convoy.

The accident occurred on Monday at Gidan Mangoro community, leaving several people dead and others seriously injured. The driver of the government Hilux was also reported to have died in the crash, while some of its other occupants sustained injuries.

According to accounts provided by residents and hospital personnel, the collision occurred at approximately 11:35 a.m. as the governor’s convoy was returning from Bida, where Bago had visited the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, to offer condolences over the death of Sagi Nupe, Hajia Aisha.

The circumstances surrounding the collision had yet to be fully established by the relevant authorities as investigations into the incident continued.

Resident Blames Alleged Wrongful Overtaking

A resident of Gidan Mangoro, Abdullahi Musa, who spoke to Vanguard, attributed the accident to an alleged dangerous overtaking manoeuvre by the Hilux driver.

According to him, the private Peugeot was travelling along its lane when the Hilux reportedly moved into its path, resulting in the head-on collision.

Musa said the impact was severe, leaving the occupants of the private car dead at the scene, while the people travelling in the government vehicle suffered serious injuries.

He explained that the incident happened during the late-morning hours when the governor’s convoy was travelling back from Bida towards Minna.

“The people in the private car died instantly, while those in the government Hilux sustained serious injuries, with the driver dying on the spot,” Musa was quoted as saying.

The resident’s account provided an initial description of how the crash allegedly happened. However, the claim regarding the cause of the accident had not been independently established, and the police were yet to release their findings.

Four male victims suspected to be postgraduate students

The four male victims were suspected to be postgraduate students of the Federal University of Technology, Minna, according to the report.

Their identities and academic affiliations had not been officially confirmed in the information available at the time of filing.

Nafisa, the driver of the Peugeot 206, was reportedly involved in professional and business activities before her death. She was said to work with a non-governmental organisation and serve as a programme manager at Labspace.

She was also identified as the founder of Wosh Mart Service Ltd.

Her death, alongside those of the other occupants of the private vehicle, brought the tragedy into focus, particularly as preliminary reports suggested that the crash claimed the lives of people travelling in both vehicles.

Further details about the victims, including their respective backgrounds and the circumstances of their journey, were not immediately available.

A staff member of Minna General Hospital, where the victims were taken after the accident, provided additional information about the casualties.

The hospital worker told Vanguard that three people died at the scene, while two others later died from injuries sustained during the collision.

The account indicated that the crash resulted in deaths both at the location of the incident and after the victims had been taken for medical attention.

Some of the injured victims were subsequently referred to the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida Specialist Hospital in Minna for more advanced medical care.

The referral was reportedly made to enable those requiring further treatment to receive appropriate attention.

Meanwhile, a former local government council chairman in Niger State was said to be among the occupants of the Hilux involved in the crash.

According to the report, the former council chairman sustained fractures to his legs but was still alive as of the time the story was filed.

His identity and the full extent of his injuries were not immediately disclosed.

The available reports did not provide a comprehensive account of the conditions of all the survivors or indicate whether additional victims remained under treatment.

FRSC confirms crash as police begin investigation

The Niger State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Aishat Sa’adu, confirmed the occurrence of the accident.

However, she explained that when FRSC personnel arrived at the scene, the victims had already been evacuated to the hospital.

Her statement confirmed the road crash but did not provide further information about the identities of the victims or the events that led to the collision.

The Niger State Police Command also acknowledged the incident, with its Police Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Police Wasiu Abiodun, confirming that an investigation was underway.

Abiodun did not disclose the names of the deceased or provide an official breakdown of the number of people killed and injured.

The investigation is expected to help determine the circumstances surrounding the collision and establish the factors that may have contributed to the loss of lives.

Although a resident alleged that the Hilux driver caused the accident by overtaking improperly, the claim remains an account of the incident rather than a conclusion reached by investigators.

Questions remain over circumstances of the crash

The accident has drawn attention to the dangers associated with high-speed driving and risky overtaking, particularly on roads where vehicles travelling in opposite directions share the same carriageway.

A head-on collision can have devastating consequences because the impact involves the combined movement of vehicles travelling towards each other.

However, the precise speed of the vehicles, their movements immediately before the crash and other possible contributing factors had not been officially established in the available reports.

The police investigation is therefore expected to provide a clearer account of what happened at Gidan Mangoro and clarify the circumstances in which the victims lost their lives.

As of the time of reporting, the authorities had confirmed the accident, but further official details about the deceased, the injured survivors and the final findings of the investigation were still awaited.

The tragedy has left five people dead, according to the reported casualty figure, while questions surrounding the cause of the collision remain unresolved.
