US Iran protests erupted across major American cities after Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, was reported killed in US-Israeli airstrikes on Tehran, triggering widespread anger and renewed debate over presidential war powers and America’s role in the Middle East.
As news of the killing spread, anti-war demonstrators gathered outside the White House, in New York’s Times Square and in cities across the country to denounce what they described as an “illegal act of war”.
Protesters accused US president Donald Trump of launching the strikes without congressional authorization and warned that the attack risked dragging the United States into another prolonged conflict.
“It wasn’t sanctioned by Congress,” said one protester in Washington. “No president can attack or bomb another country without permission.” Others argued that the speed of the decision reflected executive overreach, with several speakers describing the strike as “unprovoked” and dangerous.
Large crowds formed in Washington DC and New York, while organizers reported emergency protests in cities including Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, Chicago, Denver, Las Vegas, Los Angeles and Miami.
Demonstrations were also planned for smaller cities, reflecting the breadth of opposition among anti-war groups and progressive activists.
In New York, speakers warned that the strikes marked a “catastrophic escalation” and condemned what they called an “illegal war of aggression”.
New York political figure Zohran Mamdani said the bombing of Iranian cities and the killing of civilians would open “a new theater of war” and insisted that Americans did not want another conflict driven by regime change.
Many of the rallies were organized by a coalition of leftwing and anti-war groups, which issued a joint statement declaring: “Trump’s unprovoked, illegal attack on Iran is an act of war that threatens to cause unthinkable death and destruction. But the people of this country reject another endless war.”
Civil liberties groups also weighed in, with the American Civil Liberties Union urging Congress to immediately assert its constitutional authority over the use of military force.
The organization stressed that, from Vietnam through Iraq and Afghanistan, decisions to wage war have required explicit congressional approval, regardless of the president in office.
While opposition to the strikes was widespread, some protesters drew a distinction between condemning US military action and supporting Iran’s government. Several speakers said they opposed Tehran’s leadership and did not want Iran to acquire nuclear weapons, but argued that American bombing would not help the Iranian people.
“US history shows these interventions are about American interests,” said one protester in Times Square. “They’re not about helping people on the ground.” Others referenced past US actions in the Middle East and Latin America as evidence that regime change efforts often worsen instability.
Federal authorities placed counterterrorism and counterintelligence teams on heightened alert nationwide as demonstrations grew.
Homeland security officials said they were coordinating with intelligence and law enforcement agencies to monitor any potential threats linked to the unfolding crisis.
Supporters of the administration defended the strikes as decisive and necessary, arguing they would weaken Iran’s regional influence.
Critics countered that killing Ali Khamenei represented one of the most dramatic escalations in US-Iran relations in decades and could provoke retaliation across the region.
Many demonstrators tied their opposition to broader domestic frustrations, citing the cost of living crisis, immigration enforcement and social inequality. “There’s always money for war, but never money to solve the problems people are actually facing,” said a healthcare worker at the New York protest.
As the political fallout intensifies, the protests have become the most visible domestic response to the killing, placing pressure on lawmakers to debate war powers and the future of US involvement in the Middle East.
Organizers say further demonstrations are likely if the conflict escalates, ensuring that US Iran protests remain a defining feature of the national conversation in the days ahead.
