Terrorism in Nigeria: Government debunks false genocide claims

The Federal Government clarifies that terrorism in Nigeria affects all citizens, rejecting claims of targeted attacks against Christians while strengthening security nationwide.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has strongly rejected claims that terrorists are carrying out a systematic genocide against Christians. Officials described such reports as false, baseless, and divisive.

They emphasized that terrorism in Nigeria affects citizens of all faiths, and framing the security crisis as a religiously targeted campaign misrepresents reality.

Minister of Communications, Idris Mohammed, stated that portraying Nigeria’s security challenges as a deliberate attack on Christians alone is misleading and harmful.

“Oversimplifying the issue undermines national unity and plays into the hands of terrorists,” Idris said.

“The reality is that terrorism in Nigeria targets anyone who opposes extremist ideologies, regardless of religion or ethnicity.”

Terrorist activities in Nigeria are not confined to a single religious or ethnic group. Both Muslims and Christians, as well as those without religious affiliation, have been victims of violence.

Experts warn that misrepresenting these attacks as religiously motivated risks inflaming divisions that terrorists exploit to destabilize the country.

The Federal Government stresses that understanding terrorism in Nigeria requires recognizing its complex and multifaceted nature.

Oversimplified narratives not only distort facts but can also hinder effective response strategies.

The government has implemented robust measures to confront terrorism, combining military operations, intelligence-led initiatives, and community engagement.

Between May 2023 and February 2025, over 13,543 terrorists and criminals were neutralized, and nearly 10,000 hostages were rescued nationwide.

These numbers underscore the ongoing success of counter-terrorism operations in safeguarding citizens.

Community involvement plays a crucial role. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious activities, support deradicalization programs, and participate in initiatives aimed at preventing recruitment into extremist groups.

Such measures complement military operations and contribute to a comprehensive approach to tackling terrorism in Nigeria.

A significant milestone in counter-terrorism was the capture of top ANSARU leaders, Nigeria’s Al-Qaeda affiliate. Mahmud Muhammad Usman (Abu Bara’a), self-proclaimed Emir of ANSARU, and Mahmud al-Nigeri (Mallam Mamuda), his Chief of Staff, were apprehended during a coordinated operation.

The arrests mark a major success in dismantling terrorist networks and securing public safety.

These operations demonstrate the government’s capacity to neutralize threats effectively.

By targeting leadership structures and operational hubs, authorities aim to weaken extremist groups and reduce the risk of future attacks.

The successful ANSARU leaders captured operation illustrates the tangible results of strategic planning and intelligence coordination.

Accurate information is key in the fight against terrorism in Nigeria. Misleading claims portraying attacks as religiously motivated can sow unnecessary division.

Public education campaigns aim to promote verified information and foster national unity. Citizens are urged to stay vigilant, rely on credible sources, and support government initiatives.

The government emphasizes that defeating terrorism requires a united approach that transcends religious and ethnic lines.

Community cooperation, combined with law enforcement and military efforts, strengthens resilience and enhances overall security.

While progress has been made, terrorism remains a persistent threat. Continuous vigilance, collaboration between communities and security agencies, and sustained counter-terrorism operations are essential.

The Federal Government remains committed to neutralizing threats, rescuing hostages, and protecting all citizens, regardless of faith.

The fight against terrorism in Nigeria demands a unified, informed, and proactive response.

The combined efforts of military, law enforcement, local communities, and citizens are producing real results.

By rejecting false narratives, supporting security measures, and fostering national unity, Nigerians can ensure that extremist groups do not destabilize the country.
