Oyo court upholds PDP convention, confirms Turaki leadership legitimacy

A significant legal milestone has been reached for the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) following a decisive ruling by the Oyo State High Court in Ibadan, which affirmed the legitimacy of the party’s 2025 national convention.

The judgment has effectively resolved months of uncertainty surrounding the leadership produced at the gathering.

The case, filed under Suit No. I/1336/2025, was determined by Justice Ladiran Akintola of Court 5.

Delivering his verdict on Friday, the judge ruled that the November 15, 2025 event held in Ibadan was conducted in accordance with the law and in strict compliance with established procedures.

The decision validated not only the convention itself but also the elections that produced members of the National Working Committee.

At the heart of the legal dispute was whether the PDP convention met constitutional and statutory requirements.

After reviewing arguments from all parties, the court concluded that the convention adhered to the provisions of the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act 2022 (as amended), and the party’s internal guidelines.

Justice Akintola stated that the challengers failed to present convincing evidence showing procedural violations significant enough to nullify the exercise.

The suit was initiated by Folahan Malomo Adelabi, who sought judicial affirmation of the decisions reached during the convention.

Represented by senior advocate Musibau Adetunmbi (SAN), the claimant requested 13 specific reliefs from the court.

In a comprehensive ruling, the judge granted all the reliefs sought, reinforcing the legality of the entire process.

One of the most consequential outcomes of the ruling is the formal recognition of Kabiru Turaki as the substantive National Chairman of the party.

The court confirmed that the leadership structure that emerged from the convention, including the National Working Committee, was validly constituted.

This declaration effectively cements Turaki’s authority and stabilizes the party’s national hierarchy.

Attempts to stall the proceedings were also addressed in the judgment. Sunday Ibrahim (SAN), acting on behalf of Austin Nwachukwu and two other individuals, filed motions seeking a stay of proceedings and a suspension of the court’s ruling.

However, the Oyo High Court dismissed those applications, describing them as lacking sufficient merit.

The judge maintained that there was no legal justification to interrupt or delay the enforcement of the decision.

In addition, an earlier application by the same parties requesting to be joined in the suit was rejected.

The court held that their request did not meet the necessary legal threshold for joinder, thereby preventing further procedural complications.

By dismissing these objections, the court ensured that the matter was concluded without unnecessary prolongation.

Legal analysts suggest that the ruling sends a broader message about adherence to due process within political parties.

By emphasizing compliance with the Electoral Act 2022, the court underscored the importance of transparency and constitutional alignment in party conventions.

The judgment may serve as a reference point for similar disputes in the future, particularly in the lead-up to major electoral cycles.

For the PDP, the decision represents more than just a courtroom victory. It offers a pathway to unity after a period of internal disagreements and competing claims over leadership legitimacy.

The affirmation of the National Working Committee provides clarity to party members and stakeholders nationwide, reducing the risk of factional divisions.

Observers note that political parties often face post-convention litigation, especially when leadership transitions are involved.

However, the court’s detailed reasoning in this case appears to have comprehensively addressed the allegations raised by dissenting members.

By confirming that no internal rules were breached, the judgment reinforces confidence in the integrity of the November 2025 proceedings.

Furthermore, the ruling strengthens the standing of Kabiru Turaki, whose emergence had been contested in certain quarters.

With judicial backing now secured, his leadership can focus on strategic planning and party consolidation rather than prolonged legal defense.

This clarity is expected to enhance organizational stability at both national and state levels.

The broader political landscape may also feel the ripple effects of the judgment.

A clear and uncontested leadership structure enables the party to engage more effectively in policy articulation, grassroots mobilization, and preparations for future electoral contests.

Stability within the party hierarchy often translates into improved coordination across various organs.

In essence, the High Court’s pronouncement marks the conclusion of a significant chapter in the party’s internal affairs.

By affirming the validity of the convention and dismissing all counter-applications, the court has provided a definitive answer to questions surrounding its legitimacy.

With the legal uncertainties now resolved, attention is likely to shift toward governance strategies and party reforms.

The judgment stands as a reminder that internal democratic processes must align with national laws and constitutional standards.

For party members and observers alike, the ruling delivers both clarity and closure, firmly establishing the legitimacy of the 2025 convention and the leadership it produced.
