Ondo police arrest 10 over attempted murder, armed robbery attack

Ondo Police arrest 10 suspects over attempted murder armed robbery attack in Igoba, recover weapons, reassure residents of safety and justice.

The Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of ten suspects linked to an attempted murder armed robbery attack that occurred in Igoba Community, Akure North Local Government Area.

According to a statement issued in Akure by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olushola Ayanlade, the incident took place on October 2 and left residents terrified.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the gang stormed the community at about 11:30 a.m., heavily armed with firearms, machetes, knives, charms, and other dangerous weapons.

Their first victim, Mrs. Ogunoye Oluomo, was brutally assaulted, sustained severe injuries, and was dispossessed of her belongings.

The assailants then advanced toward the palace of the community’s traditional ruler, Oba Adinlewa John, in an audacious assassination attempt.

Fortunately, the monarch narrowly escaped death, though the attack left Igoba residents deeply shaken.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Adebowale Lawal, ordered an immediate response once the distress call was received.

Tactical teams, led by the Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, were swiftly deployed.

The coordinated effort resulted in the arrest of ten suspects connected with the attempted murder armed robbery attack.

DSP Ayanlade explained that the suspects have already confessed to their roles in the crime and will be charged to court once investigations are finalized.

Recovered items included:

Two locally fabricated pistols

One single-barrel gun

Several rounds of live ammunition

Machetes and knives

Assorted charms

Other dangerous weapons used in the attack

The recovery of these weapons, according to police sources, highlights the level of planning the gang invested in carrying out the attempted murder armed robbery attack.

Mrs. Ogunoye Oluomo, the victim who sustained injuries during the assault, is currently receiving medical treatment. Doctors have confirmed that she is responding positively to care.

Meanwhile, security agencies are intensifying efforts to apprehend other suspects who managed to flee the scene.

Ayanlade stressed that no member of the gang would escape justice, as the police remain determined to root out criminal elements across the state.

The Police Command assured residents that security has been restored to Igoba Community.

Reinforced patrols and surveillance measures have been deployed to forestall any further breakdown of law and order.

“The command hereby issues a stern warning: Ondo State will never be a safe haven for lawlessness.

“Anyone who challenges the Nigeria Police will be arrested and face the full wrath of justice,” Ayanlade declared.

He added that law-abiding residents have nothing to fear. Citizens are encouraged to continue with their normal activities, as the police remain resolute in their duty to secure lives and property.

The attempted murder armed robbery attack in Igoba has reignited discussions about security challenges in Ondo State and Nigeria as a whole.

Analysts argue that criminals are increasingly targeting rural communities and traditional rulers to instill fear and disrupt stability.

However, the rapid arrest of suspects in this case demonstrates that the Ondo State Police Command possesses both the capacity and the will to respond swiftly when called upon.

Security experts also emphasized that the recovery of locally made firearms highlights the need for tighter control of illegal weapons circulation in the region.

Community leaders in Igoba have praised the quick response of the police, noting that the prompt arrests helped restore confidence among residents.

Traditional leaders across Ondo State have also expressed solidarity with Oba Adinlewa John, describing the foiled assassination attempt as an attack not just on a person, but on the heritage and identity of the people.

The incident, though traumatic, has now strengthened the resolve of the community to support security agencies by providing timely intelligence.

The police used the opportunity to call on the public to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities.

Such cooperation, they stressed, is critical in ensuring that no repeat of the attempted murder armed robbery attack occurs in Igoba or elsewhere.

DSP Ayanlade further reassured that the Nigeria Police will continue to operate with an uncompromising determination to maintain peace and order.

The foiled attempted murder armed robbery attack in Igoba Community highlights both the boldness of criminal gangs and the resilience of law enforcement in Ondo State.

With the arrest of ten suspects, the recovery of weapons, and ongoing investigations, the police have once again shown that criminality will not be tolerated.

The command’s warning is clear: criminals must repent or relocate, as the full weight of the law will be deployed against anyone who attempts to destabilize the peace of Ondo communities.

For residents, the assurance is equally clear—law-abiding citizens can continue their daily activities without fear, as security agencies remain committed to their protection.
