Former Senator representing Ogun Central Senatorial District, Iyabo Obasanjo, has intensified consultations ahead of the 2027 governorship election, engaging women’s organisations and labour leaders in what observers describe as an early but strategic political mobilisation.
The high-level meeting, held in Abeokuta, brought together representatives of professional women’s associations, market leaders, trade unions, artisans, and civil society advocates. The gathering signals a calculated move by Obasanjo to consolidate grassroots and institutional support as political permutations ahead of Ogun 2027 begin to crystallise.
Addressing participants, the former lawmaker positioned her 7ambition as one anchored on policy continuity, institutional stability, and inclusive governance. She argued that sustainable development requires administrations to build on existing frameworks rather than discard them for political reasons.
According to her, governance should be viewed as a relay process in which successive leaders sustain momentum rather than disrupt progress. She emphasised that Ogun State’s recent strides in infrastructure, healthcare expansion, educational reforms, and industrial growth must be strengthened through deliberate continuity.
Obasanjo, a former Commissioner for Health in Ogun State, expressed satisfaction with the direction of the All Progressives Congress at both federal and state levels.
She commended President Bola Tinubu and Governor Dapo Abiodun for what she described as stabilising leadership and pledged that her administration, if elected in Ogun 2027, would consolidate on existing achievements under the APC platform.
She further assured women at the engagement that her government would go beyond symbolic inclusion. Rather than being mobilised solely during campaign cycles, she said women would occupy substantive decision-making positions across strategic ministries and agencies.
“Women must sit at the policy table,” she stated, adding that inclusive leadership strengthens governance outcomes and fosters trust.

Following her electoral defeat in 2011, she relocated to the United States, where she worked in academia and epidemiology before returning to Nigeria.
