Saudi authorities reopens Nusuk portal for Nigeria pilgrims registration

Nigeria has secured a crucial lifeline for its intending pilgrims as Saudi authorities approved a special extension to reopen the Nusuk portal for data capture and grouping.

The decision comes shortly after the global closure of the digital platform, which temporarily halted the processing of pilgrims’ information worldwide.

The reopening followed high-level diplomatic engagement between Nigerian officials and the Saudi Ministry of Hajj and Umrah.

Acting on the directive of Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, formally intervened and requested additional time for Nigeria to conclude its pending registration processes.

Sources familiar with the development disclosed that the Saudi government responded positively to Nigeria’s appeal, granting a short but critical window for completion of the exercise.

The move has been described as a diplomatic breakthrough aimed at ensuring that Nigerian pilgrims are not disenfranchised due to administrative delays.

The temporary reopening of the Nusuk portal is expected to allow Hajj managers and licensed tour operators to finalise data capturing, upload required documents, and properly group pilgrims in accordance with Saudi regulations.

Industry stakeholders had expressed concerns that the sudden global shutdown of the platform could jeopardise travel plans for thousands of Nigerians preparing for the pilgrimage.

Despite the approval, Saudi authorities reportedly made it clear that this extension is exceptional and final.

Officials emphasised that once the new deadline lapses, no additional requests for extension will be entertained.

The message underscores the urgency surrounding the pilgrims registration process and the need for strict adherence to timelines.

In response, the National Hajj Commission has directed all state pilgrims’ boards and private operators to intensify efforts immediately.

Hajj managers have been advised to operate beyond regular working hours to ensure that all intending pilgrims’ information is accurately captured and submitted before the deadline.

A circular issued to relevant agencies stressed the importance of speed and precision.

The commission urged operators to “complete and finalise all required pilgrims’ data as soon as possible to avoid last-minute complications.”

The notice further warned that incomplete entries or delayed submissions could prevent affected individuals from participating in the upcoming pilgrimage.

Stakeholders within the Hajj industry have welcomed the Saudi extension, describing it as a timely intervention that reflects the strong bilateral relationship between Nigeria and Saudi Arabia.

However, they also acknowledged that the responsibility now rests squarely on local operators to ensure compliance within the limited timeframe.

The Nusuk portal, which serves as the official digital gateway for pilgrims registration and visa processing, is central to Saudi Arabia’s efforts to streamline Hajj operations globally.

By digitising documentation and pilgrim grouping, the system enhances transparency, coordination, and logistical planning for one of the world’s largest religious gatherings.

For Nigeria, timely completion of registration procedures is particularly important given the large number of citizens who participate in Hajj annually.

Any delay in uploading accurate data could disrupt flight scheduling, accommodation allocation, and other essential arrangements handled by Saudi authorities.

Observers note that the swift diplomatic engagement by Nigerian officials highlights the government’s commitment to protecting the interests of its citizens.

The intervention not only secured additional time but also reaffirmed Nigeria’s active participation in international religious coordination frameworks.

Nevertheless, the window provided by the Saudi extension remains narrow. Industry experts caution that complacency or technical setbacks could undermine the opportunity granted.

They are calling on all Hajj managers to deploy adequate personnel, verify data thoroughly, and resolve discrepancies promptly.

The commission has also encouraged intending pilgrims to cooperate fully with operators by providing correct documentation and responding swiftly to any requests for clarification.

Ensuring accuracy at this stage is vital to preventing rejection or processing delays later in the cycle.

As preparations continue, attention now turns to how efficiently the pilgrims registration exercise will be concluded within the extension period.

Successful completion would guarantee seamless progression to subsequent stages, including visa issuance and travel coordination.

In the broader context, the development illustrates the growing reliance on digital platforms in managing large-scale religious events.

The Nusuk portal has become an indispensable tool in modern Hajj administration, requiring participating countries to align closely with Saudi timelines and standards.

With the clock ticking, Nigerian Hajj stakeholders face a decisive test of coordination and efficiency.

The Saudi extension offers relief, but it also comes with a firm reminder: deadlines must be respected.

Completing the registration process promptly will ensure that thousands of Nigerian pilgrims can fulfil their spiritual aspirations without avoidable administrative setbacks.
