Nigeria has taken a significant step toward strengthening its national addressing framework with the approval of a Digital Postcode system designed to modernise location identification across the country.
The decision was endorsed by the Federal Executive Council during its recent meeting presided over by President Bola Tinubu.
The initiative aims to introduce a Geographic Information System-enabled addressing structure that will allow for more accurate identification of homes, businesses and institutions nationwide.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, who described the new Digital Postcode initiative as a key part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen digital infrastructure and enhance service delivery across multiple sectors.
According to the minister, the newly approved system will introduce an alphanumeric coding structure linked to geographic coordinates.
This means that locations will be mapped more precisely, allowing postal services, logistics companies, emergency responders and government agencies to locate addresses quickly and accurately.
Tijani explained that the Digital Postcode system is expected to transform the way addresses are identified and used in Nigeria.
For years, many communities across the country have struggled with inconsistent or unclear addressing formats, making it difficult for delivery services, security agencies and even visitors to find specific locations.
“With this geospatial intelligent addressing framework, we will significantly improve accuracy across Nigeria while also ensuring faster and more reliable processing of mail and parcels,” the minister said in a statement shared through his official communication channels.
Implementation of the project will be carried out in collaboration with the Nigerian Postal Service, commonly known as NIPOST.
The postal agency, which is currently led by Tola Odeyemi, will play a central role in integrating the Digital Postcode system into Nigeria’s postal operations and national database.
However, officials emphasised that the project goes far beyond improving traditional postal services.
The modern postcode framework is expected to support several sectors of the economy, including logistics, e-commerce, national planning and emergency management.
