NIPOST Cracks Down on Rogue Courier Operators

The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has announced a robust crackdown on courier companies implicated in aiding the transportation of drugs and other illicit items through the country’s logistics network.

The development followed public outrage over a misleading media report falsely claiming that NIPOST had confirmed widespread drug trafficking by courier firms under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In a strongly worded statement issued on Sunday by NIPOST’s Director of Corporate Communications, Franklin Alao, the postal regulator categorically refuted the report, branding it as “false, misleading, and a threat to national security.”

“This is categorically FALSE,” the agency clarified. “At no point has NIPOST made such a statement or associated these activities with the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

While denouncing the report as sensational and irresponsible journalism, NIPOST reaffirmed its commitment to cleaning up the logistics sector and preventing it from being exploited by criminal elements. According to the agency, spreading inaccurate information on such sensitive issues undermines ongoing multi-agency efforts to combat crime and regulate courier operations.

NIPOST revealed that it has embarked on a series of regulatory interventions, including the revalidation of licenses for all courier operators and the implementation of strict Know-Your-Customer (KYC) protocols. These efforts, the agency said, are aimed at strengthening compliance and preventing the misuse of postal and delivery infrastructure.

The postal authority also announced its collaboration with key national security agencies including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Police Force, and the Nigeria Customs Service, to conduct joint investigations, enhance surveillance, and clamp down on logistics routes commonly used for the transportation of narcotics and contraband.

In addition to regulatory enforcement, NIPOST has intensified stakeholder engagement, working with logistics associations, transport unions, and licensed courier firms to promote sector-wide vigilance and raise awareness about the consequences of handling suspicious parcels.

To bolster traceability and accountability, NIPOST is also rolling out a nationwide Digital Postcode and Parcel Identification System. This technology aims to eliminate anonymity in parcel delivery, enhance screening processes, and ensure that all packages are traceable from the point of dispatch to final delivery.

“This is part of our larger strategy to safeguard the integrity of the Nigerian postal system and shield it from being hijacked by criminal enterprises,” the statement read.

NIPOST issued a stern warning that any courier operator found to be complicit in criminal activity will face immediate regulatory sanctions, including license suspension or revocation, in addition to being reported to law enforcement for prosecution.

The agency urged Nigerians to patronize only licensed and vetted courier firms, and to report any suspicious activities to either NIPOST or relevant authorities for prompt action. It also called on media practitioners and civil society groups to uphold accuracy and responsibility when reporting on matters affecting national security and public order.

With the logistics sector increasingly playing a critical role in national commerce and citizen welfare, NIPOST’s commitment to restoring order comes at a crucial time. The agency’s zero-tolerance approach to criminal activity signals a renewed drive to professionalize the industry and ensure it serves the public interest—safely and securely.

As NIPOST intensifies regulatory oversight and technological innovation, all eyes are on the agency to deliver a cleaner, safer, and more accountable logistics ecosystem in Nigeria.
