Nigerian Army disciplinary action begins over Ondo checkpoint tragedy

Nigerian Army disciplinary action begins after a soldier caused a bus driver’s death in Ondo, vowing justice, family support, and institutional accountability.

The Nigerian Army disciplinary action process has been launched following the tragic death of a commercial bus driver allegedly caused by a soldier in Ondo State.

The Army has vowed to ensure that justice is served swiftly, reaffirming its dedication to discipline, professionalism, and accountability within its ranks.

According to a statement by Major Njoka Irabor, Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the 32 Artillery Brigade, the incident occurred on Sunday, October 13, 2025, near a military checkpoint in Akunu, Akoko North-East Local Government Area.

The driver, who was travelling from Akure to Abuja, reportedly experienced a mechanical fault near the checkpoint, leaving passengers stranded.

As tensions rose, some passengers demanded refunds of their fares. One passenger sought the help of a soldier stationed nearby to intervene and retrieve the money. Unfortunately, the intervention turned violent, leading to a confrontation between the soldier and the driver.

“The soldier’s conduct was highly unprofessional and violated the Nigerian Army’s code of conduct,” the statement said. “His behavior during the incident fell short of the expectations and values that define our institution.”

This development prompted an immediate Nigerian Army disciplinary action, with senior officers ordering a full investigation to determine the facts and ensure accountability.

The 32 Artillery Brigade acted swiftly upon learning about the confrontation. The injured driver was immediately evacuated to a nearby medical facility for treatment, with the Army covering all medical expenses.

He was later transferred to the Ondo State Specialist Hospital in Akure and subsequently referred to the Federal Medical Centre, Owo, for intensive care. Despite the Army’s intervention and the best efforts of medical professionals, the driver sadly passed away on Monday, October 14, 2025.

Major Irabor expressed the Army’s deep regret, stating: “We took every possible step to save the driver’s life. The Nigerian Army stands by the family during this difficult time and takes full responsibility for the medical expenses incurred.”

In the wake of the incident, the Nigerian Army reaffirmed its commitment to upholding discipline and professionalism across all ranks. The Nigerian Army disciplinary action process, the statement emphasized, would be swift, fair, and transparent.

“The Nigerian Army is a disciplined institution guided by professionalism and respect for human rights,” the statement continued. “The soldier involved will face the full weight of military justice in Nigeria, and the outcome will be made public to maintain transparency and public trust.”

The Army assured the bereaved family that justice would not be delayed or denied, emphasizing that misconduct by any personnel would not go unpunished.

To show solidarity, senior officers from the 32 Artillery Brigade visited the family of the deceased and the Ondo State chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW). During the visit, the Army pledged to handle all burial expenses and provide continued welfare support for the family.

A liaison officer has been assigned to maintain communication with the family and oversee arrangements related to the burial and welfare of the deceased’s children.

“The Army will not abandon its responsibility,” the statement assured. “We are committed to supporting the education and wellbeing of the driver’s children to ensure their father’s death does not disrupt their future.”

The gesture has been widely appreciated by the community and the state government, who both commended the Army for its humane and proactive response.

In a show of cooperation, the Ondo State Government expressed appreciation for the Army’s quick intervention and commitment to resolving the issue peacefully. The government pledged to work hand in hand with the Brigade to ensure the deceased’s family receives full support and justice.

According to the Army, this collaboration symbolizes a shared commitment to peace, accountability, and compassion for citizens affected by unfortunate incidents involving security personnel.

The tragedy has reignited national conversations about military discipline and civilian relations. In its response, the Army underscored its zero-tolerance stance on indiscipline, stressing that no officer or soldier is above the law.

“The Nigerian Army disciplinary action process stands as a reminder that every soldier must uphold the highest standards of conduct while representing the institution,” the statement said. “Acts of misconduct, no matter how isolated, will always attract firm and transparent punishment.”

This renewed emphasis on discipline, experts say, reflects the Army’s ongoing effort to strengthen public confidence in its role as a protector of peace and justice in Nigeria.

The incident has drawn mixed reactions from Nigerians, with many calling for justice and improved training for security personnel deployed at checkpoints. Human rights advocates have also urged the Army to use this case as a learning opportunity to reinforce its engagement protocols and prevent similar occurrences in the future.

Military analysts note that the Army’s transparent handling of the case so far is commendable, particularly its prompt acknowledgment of responsibility, medical support, and communication with the public.

“The way the Army manages this case will shape public perception of military accountability,” said a security analyst in Akure.

“Swift disciplinary action and open communication are crucial steps in maintaining trust.”

The tragic death of the bus driver at the Akunu checkpoint underscores the delicate balance between maintaining security and respecting human dignity. The Nigerian Army disciplinary action now underway is more than a procedural response—it is a statement of the Army’s renewed commitment to justice, transparency, and compassion.

Through its decisive steps, condolence outreach, and collaboration with the Ondo State Government, the Army seeks not only to right a wrong but also to restore faith in its discipline and values.

Ultimately, this case serves as a stark reminder that discipline remains the cornerstone of effective military service — and that the Nigerian Army’s integrity depends on its willingness to confront and correct internal misconduct swiftly and fairly.
