NGX rallies as investors gain ₦257bn in powerful market comeback

Nigeria’s equities market opened the new trading week on a bullish note, as the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) recorded fresh gains that lifted investor confidence and expanded market capitalisation by ₦257 billion.

The positive close underscored sustained optimism among investors, even as overall trading activity moderated, reflecting a cautious but confident market mood.

At the close of trading on Monday, total market capitalisation rose to ₦97.2 trillion, driven by renewed interest in select equities across industrial, consumer goods, and insurance stocks.

The NGX All-Share Index (ASI), the benchmark indicator of market performance, advanced by 401.69 points or 0.26 per cent to settle at 152,459.07 points.

The performance extended the market’s recent upward momentum, translating to a one-week gain of 2.02 per cent, a four-week appreciation of 6.16 per cent, and an impressive year-to-date return of 48.12 per cent.

Market analysts say the trend highlights growing investor appetite for equities amid expectations of stronger corporate earnings and relative stability in macroeconomic conditions.

NGX Rallies on Renewed Investor Optimism
The fact that the NGX rallies despite a slowdown in traded volume points to selective accumulation by investors rather than broad-based speculation.

Market data showed that 451.48 million shares valued at ₦13.00 billion were exchanged in 33,290 deals during the session.

Compared with the previous trading day, trading volume declined by 49 per cent, while turnover value fell by 22 per cent.

However, the number of deals rose by 30 per cent, suggesting increased participation by retail and institutional investors who are positioning for medium- to long-term gains.

Analysts interpret this pattern as a sign of strategic buying, where investors are focusing on fundamentally strong stocks rather than chasing market-wide rallies.

This cautious optimism aligns with current market dynamics, where liquidity conditions remain tight, and investors are increasingly sensitive to earnings prospects and sector-specific developments.

Market breadth closed positive, reinforcing the bullish sentiment.

Out of 129 equities that participated in trading, 34 stocks closed higher, while 20 recorded losses.

The positive breadth indicates that gains were not limited to a few large-cap stocks but were spread across several segments of the market.

Leading the gainers’ table was Aluminium Extrusion Industries Plc, whose share price jumped by 9.72 per cent to close at ₦13.55 per share.

International Energy Insurance followed closely with a 9.69 per cent increase, reflecting renewed interest in insurance stocks amid expectations of improved underwriting performance.

MeCure Industries added 9.64 per cent, while Royal Exchange gained 9.60 per cent, further highlighting the strength seen in mid-cap and small-cap stocks during the session.

On the flip side, Custodian and Allied Insurance topped the losers’ chart, shedding 10.00 per cent to close at ₦35.10 per share.

Associated Bus Company also declined by 10.00 per cent, while Prestige Assurance Company and Guinea Insurance dropped by 7.41 per cent and 7.38 per cent, respectively.

Market watchers note that profit-taking after recent gains and stock-specific factors likely drove the losses recorded by these equities, rather than a reversal of overall market sentiment.

Trading Activity Shows Selective Accumulation
Activity on the trading floor was led by Tantalizers Plc, which recorded the highest trading volume with 50.18 million shares exchanged.

First HoldCo followed with 32.62 million shares, while Access Holdings Plc traded 27.32 million shares.

Custodian and Allied Insurance, despite closing in the red, also featured prominently in trading activity with 22.10 million shares changing hands, indicating sustained investor interest even amid price adjustments.

The pattern of trading suggests that investors are actively rebalancing portfolios, locking in profits on certain stocks while reallocating funds to undervalued or growth-oriented equities.

This behaviour has been instrumental in sustaining the rally, even as broader economic uncertainties persist.

Sectoral performance during the session largely mirrored the upbeat tone of the broader market.

The NGX Top 30 Index gained 0.27 per cent, reflecting gains in blue-chip stocks.

The Industrial Index posted a stronger increase of 0.91 per cent, buoyed by demand for manufacturing and construction-related equities.

The Consumer Goods Index advanced by 0.50 per cent, supported by renewed interest in food and beverage companies amid expectations of stable demand during the festive period.

NGX rallies

The Main Board Index also rose by 0.39 per cent, while the Pension Index edged up slightly by 0.01 per cent, indicating modest institutional participation.

The Oil and Gas Index, however, closed flat, as investors remained cautious about the sector amid ongoing concerns over global oil price volatility and domestic production challenges.

Market analysts believe the positive close reinforces the view that equities remain attractive relative to other asset classes, particularly in an environment of moderating inflation expectations and declining real returns on fixed-income instruments.

According to analysts, the NGX rallies are being driven by a combination of bargain hunting, improving corporate fundamentals, and expectations that listed companies will continue to post resilient earnings despite economic headwinds.

However, they caution that near-term market direction will depend on several factors, including macroeconomic data releases, monetary policy signals, and the pace of foreign portfolio inflows.

Investors are also expected to closely monitor developments in the foreign exchange market and fiscal policy, which could influence sentiment in the weeks ahead.

As the trading week unfolds, market participants are likely to maintain a selective approach, focusing on stocks with strong balance sheets, consistent dividend histories, and exposure to sectors poised for growth.

While short-term volatility cannot be ruled out, the prevailing sentiment suggests that investors remain confident in the medium-term outlook of the Nigerian equities market.

For now, the fact that the NGX rallies amid lower volumes underscores a market driven by conviction rather than speculation—an encouraging signal for investors seeking sustainable returns as the year draws to a close.
