Kano Shisha Lounge Ban: NDLEA, Police enforce State law

Kano shisha lounge ban sees NDLEA and police shut Arfat Lounge as government intensifies crackdown on drug abuse and illegal smoking in the state.

The Kano shisha lounge ban has gained stronger enforcement after the state government, through a joint task force of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), the Kano State Police Command, and the Kano State Tourism Board, shut down a popular recreational spot, Arfat Lounge, over alleged drug-related activities and illegal shisha smoking.

The coordinated operation took place on October 18, 2025, along Abdullahi Bayero Road in Kano.

The lounge, which had become a popular meeting point for young people, was sealed after law enforcement agents discovered evidence of shisha use and drug consumption.

The raid forms part of the broader Kano shisha lounge ban initiative aimed at protecting residents from the health and moral hazards associated with drug use.

Speaking after the operation, Alhaji Tukur Bala Sagagi, Chairman of the Kano State Tourism Board, stated that the closure of Arfat Lounge aligns with the state government’s determination to enforce the existing law prohibiting shisha smoking.

He explained that the Kano shisha lounge ban is backed by legislation that strictly forbids the use or sale of shisha and other similar substances within the state.

“There is a law that prohibits shisha smoking in Kano State, and the government will not tolerate anyone violating it,” Sagagi declared.

He emphasized that the campaign is not against business owners but against establishments that promote social vices and drug abuse under the cover of entertainment.

Sagagi also urged lounge operators and café owners across the state to sanitize their environments and ensure that no illegal substances are used within their premises.

According to him, the Kano shisha lounge ban represents a necessary step toward preserving the state’s moral standards and safeguarding the health of its citizens.

Operatives of the NDLEA confirmed that the raid was carried out based on credible intelligence linking Arfat Lounge to the sale and use of illegal substances. Several suspects were arrested and are currently undergoing investigation.

A senior NDLEA officer noted that the agency has intensified surveillance on nightclubs, lounges, and other entertainment spots across Kano to identify centers where illegal drug activities occur.

“This operation is part of our commitment to support the Kano shisha lounge ban and rid the state of narcotics and addictive smoking,” the officer said.

The Kano State Police Command also reaffirmed its support for the government’s anti-drug campaign.

A police spokesperson disclosed that security agencies are working closely with other state bodies to maintain law and order while ensuring full compliance with the shisha prohibition law.

The Kano shisha lounge ban reflects a broader initiative to combat moral decay and protect young people from harmful habits.

The government insists that such enforcement operations are not merely punitive but preventive, as they aim to reduce exposure to addiction, crime, and moral decline among the youth.

Alhaji Sagagi reiterated that the state government is committed to promoting a healthy, drug-free environment.

“We are not against leisure or entertainment. We simply want citizens to operate within the law and avoid practices that destroy lives,” he said.

Public health experts have equally applauded the initiative, warning that shisha smoking, often perceived as harmless, is highly addictive and linked to severe respiratory and cardiovascular diseases.

They note that enforcing the Kano shisha lounge ban could significantly reduce exposure to these risks and discourage drug-related behavior.

Reactions to the closure of Arfat Lounge have been mixed but largely supportive. Many residents praised the state government for its proactive stance, emphasizing that drug abuse and shisha smoking have become widespread among young people.

However, some community members have called for a balanced approach, suggesting that alongside enforcement, the government should establish recreational alternatives and rehabilitation centers.

They argue that education, empowerment, and awareness programs will help sustain the impact of the Kano shisha lounge ban in the long term.

Civil society organizations working in the areas of youth empowerment and substance abuse prevention have urged the government to create community-based programs that offer counseling and skill acquisition opportunities to at-risk youths.

The Kano State Tourism Board has announced that it will continue collaborating with the NDLEA and the police to identify and shut down any establishment violating the Kano shisha lounge ban.

Routine inspections and awareness campaigns are planned to ensure compliance with the shisha prohibition law and to sensitize business owners about the consequences of promoting drug-related activities.

According to Sagagi, the board’s mission is not only to enforce laws but also to promote tourism that reflects the culture, discipline, and values of Kano State.

He noted that true tourism thrives in an environment where public morality, safety, and health are respected.

The closure of Arfat Lounge serves as a symbolic warning that the state will no longer tolerate any business or individual violating its public health and morality codes.

Authorities have promised to intensify their campaign through more raids, community engagement, and stricter enforcement measures.

As Kano continues to lead in enforcing discipline and moral values, the Kano shisha lounge ban stands as a statement of intent — a commitment to safeguarding the younger generation, strengthening the rule of law, and promoting a society built on responsibility and respect for health and order.
