Equities market rebounds strongly with N279bn gain, boosting investor confidence

The Nigerian equities market staged a strong comeback on Thursday, reversing earlier losses and boosting investor confidence with a remarkable N279bn gain in market capitalization.

Analysts say the equities market rebounds was driven by renewed bargain-hunting across large- and mid-cap stocks, particularly in the banking and oil and gas sectors.

Equities Market Rebounds: A Positive Turn After Days of Uncertainty

For much of this week, trading on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) reflected mixed sentiments as investors cautiously monitored economic signals and awaited corporate earnings reports.

However, the equities market rebounds provided a relief rally, lifting the market capitalization from N89.1tn to N89.4tn in a single session.

The NGX All-Share Index surged by 432.94 points, or 0.31 per cent, to close at 141,149.04 points, underscoring renewed optimism among traders.

Market watchers have described the equities market rebounds as a sign that investors are positioning for long-term gains while also taking advantage of recent price corrections.

Sectoral Boost in the Equities Market Rebounds

The equities market rebounds was broad-based, with sectoral indices reflecting positive momentum.

The Banking Index recorded the strongest growth, rising by 1.02 per cent, as leading lenders such as Zenith Bank and Fidelity Bank attracted heavy trading volumes.

The Oil and Gas Index advanced by 0.74 per cent, reflecting renewed investor interest in energy stocks.

The Consumer Goods Index and the Pension Index also posted modest gains of 0.31 per cent and 0.37 per cent, respectively.

This sectoral spread suggests that the equities market rebounds was not confined to a single segment but represented wider investor confidence across the board.

Gainers and Losers in the Equities Market Rebounds

Leading the pack of gainers was MeCure Industries, which appreciated by 9.89 per cent to close at N26.10 per share.

Energy giant Oando followed closely with a 9.5 per cent rise to N49.00 per share, while McNichols and Chams also recorded strong performances, advancing by 9.31 per cent and 9.24 per cent, respectively.

On the losing side, Eterna suffered the steepest decline, shedding 10 per cent to end at N27.90 per share. Sovereign Trust Insurance dipped 4.84 per cent, while The Initiates and Caverton Offshore Support Group lost 3.84 per cent and 3.76 per cent, respectively.

Despite these losses, overall market sentiment remained upbeat, thanks to the equities market rebound.

Trading Activity Surges as Equities Market Rebounds

Trading activity in the equities market witnessed a notable surge, highlighting investor enthusiasm. A total of 781.7 million shares valued at N19.5bn exchanged hands in 20,382 deals.

This marked a 77 per cent increase in trading volume and a 15 per cent rise in turnover, even though the number of deals declined by six per cent compared to the previous session.

Consolidated Hallmark Holdings dominated the activity chart, trading 333.2 million units worth N1.25bn. Sterling Bank followed with 104.9 million shares valued at N771.8m, while Zenith Bank recorded 45.5 million shares worth N3.14bn.

In terms of value, MTN Nigeria topped the list with transactions worth N5.01bn from 12.1 million shares, cementing its role as a major market driver during the equities market rebound.

Financial analysts have attributed the equities market rebound to renewed bargain-hunting and investor positioning ahead of the release of third-quarter earnings reports.

According to experts, the positive session reflects a combination of confidence in corporate fundamentals and opportunities presented by recent price corrections in key stocks.

Analysts also noted that despite short-term volatility, the Nigerian equities market has maintained a year-to-date return of 37.14 per cent.

This resilience, even after a one-week loss of 0.78 per cent, demonstrates the underlying strength of the market.

Looking ahead, market observers believe the equities market rebound could set the tone for further rallies, especially if upcoming corporate earnings exceed investor expectations.

However, they caution that external factors such as global oil prices, foreign exchange pressures, and monetary policy decisions will continue to shape investor sentiment.

For now, the equities market rebound has restored a degree of confidence among traders and positioned the NGX for potential gains in the final quarter of the year.

Investors are expected to keep a close watch on the financial and oil and gas sectors, which remain key drivers of market momentum.

The equities market rebound on Thursday, with its N279bn gain, marked a significant shift in sentiment on the Nigerian Exchange.

Driven by bargain-hunting, sectoral gains, and strong trading activity, the rebound underscores the resilience of Nigeria’s capital market.

While risks remain, investors are cautiously optimistic that this momentum will carry into the final quarter, positioning the equities market for sustained growth.
