Ekiti Court death sentence: Brothers, maid convicted for robbery

Ekiti Court death sentence: Two brothers and their maid sentenced for robbing 87-year-old woman, sending strong message against armed robbery in Ekiti.

An Ekiti Court death sentence has been handed down to two brothers and their maid for robbing an 87-year-old woman of ₦147,000 and a wristwatch in Ifaki Ekiti.

The High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti, presided over by Justice Lekan Ogunmoye, found Shadrack Akpos (30), Lucky Akpos (33), and Adunola Precious (24) guilty of conspiracy and armed robbery.

The prosecution revealed that the robbery occurred on June 12, 2024, when the suspects entered the home of Madam Victoria Folorunso armed with a gun and a wooden plank.

They stole ₦147,000 and a wristwatch, leaving the elderly victim traumatized. The offences were in violation of Sections 421 and 321(2)(b) of the Criminal Laws of Ekiti State, 2021.

During the trial, Madam Folorunso recounted how the robbers threatened her.

“One pointed a gun at my forehead, another held a plank. They demanded all my money, taking ₦100,000 from under my bed and ₦47,000 from my underwear. They also took my wristwatch and temporarily took my phone,” she said.

She added that the robbers instructed her to withdraw money from her account and give it to her maid, Adunola Precious, who was involved in the plan.

“They warned me not to tell anyone or they would kidnap and kill me. I later informed my children, who reported the matter to the police,” she testified.

The prosecution, led by Kunle-Shina Adeyemo, presented two witnesses and tendered several exhibits, including the defendants’ statements, a search warrant, and a wooden gun.

The defense, represented by Oluwatoyin Marcus and Mitchel Aribisala, called one witness each but failed to discredit the evidence.

In delivering judgment, Justice Ogunmoye emphasized the pivotal role of Adunola Precious in facilitating the robbery. “She opened the door for the robbers, enabling them to commit the offence seamlessly,” the judge noted.

The court found that the defendants conspired and executed the robbery with full knowledge and intent, establishing their guilt beyond reasonable doubt.

The court handed down the Ekiti Court death sentence to all three convicts. “The first, second, and third defendants are sentenced to death by hanging. May God have mercy on their souls,” Justice Ogunmoye pronounced.

The verdict has received widespread attention, with residents praising the court for delivering justice and sending a strong deterrent message.

Legal analysts noted that the case underscores the dangers of insider-assisted crimes, particularly involving household staff.

The case of Shadrack Akpos, Lucky Akpos, and Adunola Precious serves as a reminder that the justice system in Ekiti is vigilant and uncompromising.
