US debt set to soar above Italy and Greece after Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’

Donald Trump’s economic policies are set to push US debt beyond Italy and Greece, IMF forecasts reveal. “The trajectory is unsustainable if borrowing continues unchecked,” said Mahmood Pradhan, head of global macro at Amundi Investment Institute. Tax cuts and defence spending underpin the alarming rise.

The IMF predicts US debt will reach 143% of GDP by 2030, while Italy stabilizes at 137% and Greece falls to 130%. “Europe has imposed discipline; the US has not,” Pradhan added, highlighting global contrasts in fiscal restraint and policy priorities.

Greece reduced its debt ratio from 210% in 2020 to a projected 130%, illustrating stringent fiscal management after crises. Lorenzo Codogno, former chief economist at Italy’s Treasury, said, “Europe’s lessons in austerity cannot be ignored.”

Italy’s primary budget surplus target demonstrates restraint. “Rome’s fiscal prudence offsets slow growth,” Codogno noted, stressing that government discipline maintains investor confidence despite external pressures from Trump’s tariffs and demands on European defence budgets.

Trump’s “big, beautiful bill” reversed Biden-era deficit controls, expanding federal borrowing while cutting taxes for middle- and high-income earners. James Knightley of ING warned, “Policymakers in Washington risk structural fragility by ignoring long-term debt consequences.”

The proposed $1 trillion “golden dome” defence shield illustrates Trump’s priority on militarized spending. Pradhan observed, “This is a symbolic, but dangerous, fiscal gamble that strains US public finances and global trust in its economy.”

US annual budget deficits may exceed 7% over the next five years, dwarfing Italy’s 2.9% target this year. Knightley commented, “The US is borrowing aggressively, creating vulnerabilities that Europe has historically avoided through disciplined planning.”

Trump’s tax cuts and spending initiatives fuel economic growth but increase debt risks. “Short-term boosts cannot compensate for long-term structural deficits,” Pradhan said, emphasizing the contrast with Greece’s managed fiscal recovery and debt reduction trajectory.

Italy’s economy is constrained by low growth and demographic decline. Codogno explained, “Population contraction eases fiscal pressure, but external shocks, such as Trump’s tariffs, complicate planning for Rome’s government and stability.”

US debt projections dwarf European levels due to political priorities. Knightley warned, “Exceeding Italy and Greece is more than symbolic—it signals potential loss of fiscal flexibility and higher borrowing costs globally.”

Trump supporters praise tax cuts for stimulating consumption and investment. “Immediate growth may rise, but debt accumulates faster than revenues,” Pradhan cautioned, stressing the peril of prioritizing politics over long-term fiscal responsibility.

Greece’s recovery illustrates disciplined management after financial crises. Codogno noted, “Athens’ austerity measures restored credibility and reduced debt. Washington’s approach ignores these lessons, risking investor confidence and economic stability.”

European nations brace for US fiscal overreach, balancing Trump’s military spending demands with limited domestic resources. “External pressures test Rome and Athens’ resilience,” Codogno said, emphasizing that US borrowing strategies reverberate internationally.

The “golden dome” defence plan may cost nearly $1 trillion, straining public finances. Knightley warned, “Debt levels affect monetary policy, interest rates, and global perception. America’s fiscal recklessness has symbolic and practical consequences.”

Trump’s deficit expansion surpasses historical US patterns. Pradhan commented, “This is not normal borrowing; it’s a structural change that elevates risk for policymakers, investors, and citizens alike, leaving future governments constrained.”

Italy maintains modest growth and household income recovery. Codogno said, “Despite slow expansion, fiscal discipline stabilizes the economy. America’s debt trajectory lacks similar safeguards and invites volatility.”

High US debt could trigger inflationary pressures and constrained social spending. Knightley explained, “Future administrations may face impossible choices. Borrowing today shifts the burden to tomorrow, undermining confidence domestically and abroad.”

Tax incentives and defence spending stimulate short-term growth, yet long-term costs loom. Pradhan stated, “The US is effectively mortgaging its future for immediate political objectives, risking sustainable economic planning and credibility.”

Europe watches carefully as US debt surpasses previous records. Codogno remarked, “Metrics like these change the narrative. Policymakers may underestimate consequences, but global investors are aware when discipline is absent.”

Trump’s fiscal approach contrasts sharply with Europe’s measured strategies. Knightley noted, “Long-term solvency is secondary to political expediency. This divergence may create a fiscal reckoning that tests international trust in the US economy.”

Debt accumulation limits US policy flexibility. Pradhan said, “High deficits reduce options for stimulus or crisis response. The US may find itself trapped between political ambitions and economic realities.”

Rising debt may force higher interest rates and reduced social spending. Knightley explained, “Markets will respond to perception of risk. Exceeding Italy and Greece signals alarm for investors and fiscal observers worldwide.”

Trump’s legacy on debt will endure beyond his tenure. Pradhan concluded, “This is a cautionary tale: short-term political wins cannot offset structural fiscal deterioration. The global economy is watching, and so are Americans.”

US debt surpassing Europe’s historically high levels marks a symbolic shift. Knightley emphasized, “Debt dynamics influence growth, credibility, and market stability. The implications are profound, and corrective action may come too late.”

Europe’s fiscal discipline contrasts sharply with US recklessness. Codogno added, “Lessons from Italy and Greece show restraint is necessary. Trump’s policies illustrate what happens when short-term priorities overshadow structural responsibility.”

By 2030, the US faces unparalleled debt pressure, with long-term consequences for monetary policy, international confidence, and domestic stability. Pradhan warned, “Unchecked deficits are not sustainable. Without reform, the next decade may witness a fiscal reckoning.”

Trump’s policies have created an unprecedented divergence between the US and disciplined European nations. Knightley summarized, “The US is entering uncharted territory. Debt is rising, credibility is tested, and the global financial system takes note.”

The IMF projections paint a stark picture of fiscal imbalance. Pradhan concluded, “This is more than numbers. It is a structural vulnerability that demands attention. The world cannot ignore Washington’s borrowing spree.”
