The Federal High Court convicts Nnamdi Kanu for terrorism, incitement, and IPOB membership. Evidence proves intent beyond doubt in landmark ruling.
The Federal High Court in Abuja has delivered a landmark ruling in the case of Nnamdi Kanu, the Biafra separatist leader, officially convicting him on terrorism charges and for membership of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).
The court’s decision confirms that evidence presented by the prosecution proves Kanu’s actions went beyond mere political activism, establishing criminal intent and danger to the nation.
Presiding Judge James Omotosho, who earlier removed Kanu from the courtroom for unruly behavior, ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.
Kanu was convicted on six of the seven counts filed against him by the federal government, including acts of terrorism, issuing illegal stay-at-home orders in the South-east, inciting violence, instructing followers on bomb-making, and maintaining membership in a terrorist organisation.
Justice Omotosho cited multiple broadcasts and public statements by Kanu, showing that he repeatedly called for violent action against the Nigerian state.
“The defendant knew what he was doing when making these threats. His objective was to forcefully achieve Biafra independence, regardless of the lives of his own people,” the judge stated.
Evidence included a video from the Third World Igbo Congress in Los Angeles, United States, where Kanu encouraged violence and rejected peaceful dialogue.
During the EndSARS protests in 2020, his call-in broadcasts allegedly urged citizens to attack government facilities, burn police stations, and target security personnel and their families.
The court highlighted that such incitement was not hypothetical: 128 police officers, 37 military personnel, and 10 other security operatives were killed, while 164 police stations and nine INEC offices were destroyed.
The court described Kanu as “an international terrorist” and warned that his directives to attack foreign embassies, including threats against the British High Commissioner, showed a willingness to escalate violence beyond Nigeria’s borders.
Kanu’s stay-at-home orders were ruled unconstitutional and labelled terrorist acts, while his continued professed membership of IPOB, a proscribed terrorist organisation since 2017, confirmed his involvement in a recognised terrorist group.
Justice Omotosho emphasized that Kanu failed to present any defense despite repeated opportunities, making the prosecution’s case uncontroverted.
“His incitement caused deaths, destruction, and widespread fear. This is not just words—it is violent action,” the judge stated.
The ruling on Nnamdi Kanu terrorism conviction also serves as a warning to other separatist movements and violent actors.
By holding Kanu accountable for incitement, terrorist acts, and membership in a proscribed group, the Federal High Court reinforced Nigeria’s commitment to the rule of law.
The sentencing is yet to be delivered, but experts predict a significant custodial term.
Analysts note the ruling will have broad implications for IPOB supporters and other separatist movements, reaffirming that violent actions, even when politically motivated, will face strict legal consequences.
