Bill Gates apologizes for Jeffrey Epstein ties in foundation staff address

Bill Gates apologizes for Jeffrey Epstein ties during a candid address to staff at his philanthropic foundation, describing his past association with the disgraced financier as a “huge mistake” and acknowledging the reputational damage it caused.

According to a report by the The Wall Street Journal, Bill Gates told employees at a recent town hall that he regretted spending time with Jeffrey Epstein and introducing foundation executives to meetings involving him.

Gates, who co-founded Microsoft and later established one of the world’s largest philanthropic organisations, said he accepted responsibility for the controversy surrounding the association.

“I apologize to other people who are drawn into this because of the mistake that I made,” Gates reportedly said during the internal session, which was held on Tuesday.

He stressed that he had not participated in any of Epstein’s crimes and denied ever spending time with victims connected to the convicted sex offender.

The apology comes amid renewed scrutiny following the release of US justice department files related to Epstein. Those documents reportedly included emails Epstein sent to himself containing allegations about Gates’ personal life. Gates has strongly denied those claims, describing them as false and misleading.

Gates acknowledged that his decision to meet Epstein, who had pleaded guilty in 2008 to soliciting a minor for prostitution, reflected poor judgment.

He said he was aware that Epstein had served time but did not fully investigate the background or broader implications of continuing contact. “It was a huge mistake to spend time with Epstein,” Gates told staff, adding that the meetings conflicted with the foundation’s mission and values.

The billionaire philanthropist also admitted during the town hall that he had engaged in two extramarital affairs, including one with a Russian bridge player and another with a Russian nuclear physicist.

He framed those relationships as personal failings but separate from any criminal wrongdoing linked to Epstein.

The files’ release has intensified public and media focus on Gates’ past interactions with Epstein, including claims that Epstein attempted to leverage knowledge of Gates’ personal life in an effort to secure support for a proposed multibillion-dollar charitable fund.

Previous reporting by the The Wall Street Journal indicated that Epstein sought to use the information as pressure when Gates declined to participate.

During the town hall, Gates reportedly said that Epstein had portrayed himself as well-connected among wealthy financiers and claimed he could help mobilise resources for global health initiatives.

Gates admitted that seeing other prominent figures attend meetings contributed to a sense that the encounters were “normalized,” even though they were inconsistent with the foundation’s ethical standards.

A spokesperson for the Gates Foundation told the Journal that Gates holds town halls twice a year and addressed staff questions in detail. The spokesperson emphasised that he spoke candidly and took responsibility for the decisions that led to the controversy.

Gates underlined that the foundation’s work is highly sensitive to reputation, noting that partners can choose whether or not to collaborate. He described the episode as a cautionary lesson about judgment and the importance of aligning personal decisions with institutional values.

While Gates maintains he had no involvement in Epstein’s criminal conduct, the renewed attention underscores the long shadow cast by the financier’s crimes and the reputational risks faced by global philanthropies when leaders’ personal associations come under question.

The foundation continues its global health and development programmes, but Gates’ remarks signal an effort to draw a clear line between his past mistakes and the organisation’s ongoing mission.

The episode has also reignited debate about governance and accountability within major philanthropic organisations, particularly when their founders’ personal conduct risks overshadowing institutional goals.

Observers note that the scrutiny facing Gates Foundation reflects a broader expectation that leaders of influential charities must meet higher ethical standards, given their reliance on public trust, donor confidence, and partnerships with governments and multilateral agencies.

For Bill Gates, the public apology to staff appears aimed at limiting further reputational fallout while reaffirming the foundation’s commitment to transparency.

Analysts say the long-term impact will depend on whether stakeholders view the acknowledgment as sufficient accountability or as part of a continuing need for clearer safeguards to prevent personal relationships from intersecting with the foundation’s work.
