Berlin pride attack Abdul Ballout shot dead after Tiergarten Van and knife rampage

Berlin pride attack Abdul Ballout has left one woman dead and 29 injured. The 21-year-old suspect was shot dead by police in Spandau after driving into a crowd.

The incident happened Saturday night near Brandenburg Gate. A rented minivan swerved into pedestrians during Berlin’s Pride celebrations, then the driver attacked with a machete.

How The Attack Unfolded In Tiergarten

Police say the white van struck people on a path in Tiergarten park. The attack occurred close to where the Pride march had finished earlier.

One woman was killed instantly. Emergency services treated 29 others for injuries ranging from minor to critical. Organisers cut the event short.

Witness Julian Methig called it “one of the worst days for the queer community.” He said he never expected violence at Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ celebration.

Suspect Identified As Abdul Ballout

Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt named the suspect as Abdul Ballout. He is a German national with Lebanese roots and prior criminal convictions.

“We are dealing here with a suspected perpetrator who had previously drawn attention through radicalisation,” Dobrindt told reporters near the scene.

Media reports said Ballout supported Islamic State. He was convicted of “preparing a serious act of subversive violence” after a failed trip to the Middle East.

Police Operation Ends In Spandau

Ballout fled on foot after crashing the van. Police launched a citywide manhunt with helicopters and officers from multiple states.

On Sunday evening, officers located him in an allotment complex in Spandau. He was shot dead during the operation, officials confirmed.

Authorities had warned the public not to approach him. He was considered armed and dangerous after the Tiergarten van and knife rampage.

Family Speaks From Lebanon

Ballout’s father Tawfik spoke to Der Spiegel from Lebanon. He described his son as “generous, emotional, loving” and said the family was Shia but not extremist.

“We do not support Islamic State,” Tawfik said. He added they had argued about Ballout’s long beard, which he saw as a symbol of extremism.

“He was brainwashed,” Tawfik told the outlet. He said his last call with Abdul was Saturday, when his son said he missed the family.

Political Response Across Germany

Chancellor Friedrich Merz condemned the attack as an assault on society. “We will defend our freedom,” he said at a press conference Sunday.

The Bundestag flag was lowered to half mast. Merz urged Germans to avoid division and intimidation in the aftermath of the violence.

Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner called it “an attack on our free and cosmopolitan society.” He wrote that freedom was attacked in the most appalling way.

LGBTQ+ Community Reacts

This year’s Christopher Street Day began with a pro-democracy rally. The parade motto was “taking a stand is hot” amid rising hostility.

Over 80 floats and 50 groups marched past Potsdamer Platz. The route ended at the Brandenburg Gate under tight security.

Campaigners warned before Pride that attacks were increasing. They linked rising hostility to far-right gains and Islamist-inspired incidents in Germany.

National Security Concerns Rise

Germany has faced several vehicle and knife attacks recently. Officials say Ballout had a suspended juvenile sentence and was known to police.

Dobrindt said authorities are reviewing how a convicted radical could carry out such an attack. Intelligence services will assess gaps in monitoring.

The government promised tougher measures for known extremists. Debates over surveillance and deportation laws are expected in parliament this autumn.

International Leaders Offer Solidarity

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen expressed sympathy. She said Pride stands for “freedom, dignity and equality – the fundamental values of the EU.”

French President Emmanuel Macron posted: “Faced with hatred and violence, our response will always be unity, freedom, and resolve.”

Italian PM Giorgia Meloni and UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband also condemned the attack. They offered support to Germany and the victims’ families.

Far-Right Reaction To Berlin Attack

AfD co-leader Tino Chrupalla wrote online that religious extremists must not divide the country. The party used the incident to push security policies.

National Rally’s Jordan Bardella in France said “the Islamist threat remains a major issue in Europe.” He tied it to attacks on Western freedoms.

Analysts warn such rhetoric could deepen social divides. LGBTQ+ groups say solidarity, not scapegoating, is needed after the tragedy.

What Happens Next In Berlin

Investigators are examining Ballout’s apartment in Schöneberg. They found no one there during an early Sunday search.

Police removed the van from Tiergarten on Sunday. Forensics will trace how it was rented and whether accomplices were involved.

Berlin will hold regional elections in September. Security for public events is likely to be a key campaign issue.

Remembering The Victims

One woman died and 29 were hurt. Thermal blankets and embraces were seen near emergency vehicles as people processed the shock.

CSD organisers vowed the event would return stronger. “We will not be silenced,” one organizer told crowds gathered near the memorial site.
