Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA have rescued 48 kidnapped residents after terrorists attacked Magami village in Zamfara State.

Troops operating under the Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA (JTF NW OPFY), have rescued 48 civilians who were reportedly abducted during a terrorist attack on Magami village in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The successful rescue was carried out in the early hours of Sunday, July 26, 2026, after security forces responded to an emergency report about an invasion of the community by a large group of terrorists.

The incident reportedly began when the attackers stormed the village on dozens of motorcycles and began rounding up residents.

According to information received by troops of Sector 2, the terrorists arrived with about 40 motorcycles and attempted to take a large number of villagers away from the community and into the surrounding bush.

While some of the attackers reportedly moved into the village to seize residents, another group remained positioned around the outskirts of Magami with the motorcycles, apparently preparing to facilitate the movement of the abducted civilians.

The situation, however, changed after troops received a distress call and immediately mobilised to the affected community.

Upon reaching the area, the troops engaged the terrorists in a gun battle. The confrontation reportedly forced the attackers to abandon their captives and retreat into the surrounding bushes as the military personnel intensified their response.

The swift intervention by the troops ultimately prevented the terrorists from successfully taking the victims deeper into the bush. All 48 civilians who had been abducted during the attack were subsequently rescued and brought to safety.

The rescue operation represents another intervention by security forces in response to attacks targeting communities in Zamfara State, where residents have continued to face security challenges from armed criminal groups and terrorists.

However, the attack was not without casualties. One civilian was killed during the incident, while two other people sustained gunshot wounds.

The injured victims were evacuated to the General Hospital in Kaura Namoda, where they were admitted for medical attention. They are currently receiving treatment for the injuries sustained during the attack.

Following the successful recovery of the abducted residents, troops continued their operations in the area, carrying out aggressive patrols around Magami and adjoining locations.

The patrols were aimed at maintaining control of the area, preventing the attackers from regrouping and ensuring that the community remained protected against any further threats.

The military’s response also underscores the importance of timely distress calls in helping security forces react quickly to attacks on vulnerable communities. In this case, the alert received by Sector 2 enabled the troops to move swiftly and confront the terrorists before they could escape with the large number of residents they had rounded up.

Although the attackers managed to flee into the bush during the exchange of fire, the military intervention ensured that the 48 abducted civilians were not taken away from the area.

The operation has also brought relief to the affected families, who were faced with the sudden abduction of their loved ones during the early morning attack. The successful rescue means that the victims have been reunited with their communities following the intervention of the troops.

Security personnel have continued to maintain a presence in the general area after the incident, with patrols being conducted to deter further attacks and reassure residents.

The latest development comes amid ongoing security operations across the North-West, where troops have been carrying out responses to attacks, kidnappings and other criminal activities affecting local communities.

For the residents of Magami, the immediate priority following the attack remains the safety of the community and the recovery of those injured. While one civilian tragically lost his life, the rescue of 48 others has provided a significant outcome from the military operation.

The incident also highlights the continuing security concerns confronting rural communities in parts of Zamfara State and the need for rapid intervention whenever attacks occur.

With the rescued victims now safe and the two injured civilians receiving medical care, troops have sustained patrols in and around the area as part of efforts to prevent the terrorists from returning to the community.

The military’s operation ultimately disrupted the attackers’ attempt to abduct a large number of residents, leading to the safe recovery of all 48 victims and reinforcing the role of rapid security response in protecting civilians during attacks.
