The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr. Nyesom Wike, has reaffirmed the federal government’s commitment to delivering essential infrastructural projects to the residents of Kuje Area Council, with a particular focus on roads.
The promise was made during a stakeholders’ meeting held on Thursday in Kuje, where Wike visited the area to express gratitude for the positive outcome of the February 21 FCT area council elections.
Addressing community leaders, traditional rulers, and residents, Wike emphasized that the administration was committed to translating electoral support into visible development, particularly through critical Kuje road projects.
He noted that roads were a vital component of economic growth, mobility, and access to social services, and that the federal government had taken note of the council’s developmental priorities.
The council’s Chairman-elect, Mr. Danjuma Shekwolo, had earlier highlighted three specific road projects that would significantly enhance connectivity and commerce in Kuje.
Shekwolo identified the Gwargwarda to Kuje Road, Kuje to Rubochi Road, and Kuje to Kabi Road as priority projects that could spur economic activity if executed promptly.
He appealed to the minister to consider these projects as part of the administration’s ongoing infrastructural agenda.
In response, Minister Wike assured the stakeholders that the federal government would work closely with the Chairman-elect and traditional leaders to determine the sequence and timing of these projects.
“Your elected chairman mentioned two or three road projects. By the time your chairman is sworn in by June, I will call him, call the traditional rulers, and we will sit and agree on which project we will begin with,” Wike said.
“I am very interested in Kuje, and because the Kuje people have supported us, we will deliver these projects for you.”
The Minister also recounted how, during a 2023 town hall meeting, residents had appealed for the completion of the Airport Road to Kuje, a project awarded during the previous administration.
Additionally, the residents requested that the Tipper Garage to LEA Secretariat Road be dualised to accommodate increasing traffic.
Wike disclosed that the garage road contract had been awarded, completed, and officially inaugurated, while the contractor for the Airport Road project had been directed to resume work immediately.
“The contractor has assured us that the Airport Road project will be part of the projects Mr. President will inaugurate to celebrate his third anniversary,” Wike stated.
He added that the Kuje-Gwagwalada Road, which stretches approximately 16 to 17 kilometres, was also progressing steadily.
“We are praying to Almighty Allah that by June this year, Mr. President will inaugurate this road, ensuring Kuje residents benefit from improved transportation,” he added.
The minister praised Kuje residents for their active participation in the council elections and emphasized that President Bola Tinubu had directed that such support must be acknowledged.
“He asked that I go back to all area councils and convey his appreciation to traditional leaders and stakeholders.
“You were asked to vote for candidates supporting him, and you did not hesitate—you voted, and for that, he is grateful,” Wike said.
Wike further encouraged Chairman-elect Shekwolo to remain close to his constituents, stressing the importance of consultation with traditional leaders, women, and youth groups.
“Always seek advice from your people. Governance is about inclusion, and consultation ensures development is sustainable,” he advised.
The minister also urged Kuje residents to continue supporting the Tinubu administration, emphasizing that consistent community engagement would help the federal government deliver on its developmental promises.
“I know that things may not be exactly as we want, but by the grace of God, progress is ongoing.
“We have not yet reached El Dorado, but with your continued support, we will get there,” Wike stated, highlighting the administration’s commitment to steady improvement.
Chairman-elect Shekwolo, in his remarks, expressed gratitude to both Minister Wike and the residents for their confidence in his leadership.
He pledged to collaborate with the FCT Minister under the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda to ensure that the dividends of democracy reached the people of Kuje.
He lauded the visible infrastructural developments in the council, noting that improved roads had eased mobility and created a more conducive environment for trade and business.
Shekwolo reiterated his request for the execution of the three key road projects, stating that completion of these roads would significantly boost local commerce, facilitate easier transportation, and improve access to social amenities.
“Your Excellency, I know as a leader and a father, you will do that for your son,” he remarked, appealing to Minister Wike’s commitment to community development.
The meeting concluded with Minister Wike reaffirming the government’s pledge to deliver on all planned Kuje road projects while ensuring collaboration with local leaders to determine priorities.
Residents were encouraged to maintain their support and participate actively in future development programs.
The minister also expressed optimism that, with the combined efforts of government officials, traditional leaders, and residents, Kuje would witness accelerated infrastructural growth and improved quality of life.
By the end of the meeting, it was evident that the renewed focus on Kuje road projects would not only improve transportation but also stimulate the local economy, enhance social interaction, and reinforce the administration’s commitment to inclusive development.
