Warri–Itakpe Train Service resumes October 29 after major safety upgrade

Warri–Itakpe Train Service resumes October 29 after major safety and maintenance upgrade to boost passenger comfort, reliability, and transport efficiency.

The Warri–Itakpe Train Service is set to officially resume operations on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, following several weeks of suspension for critical safety, maintenance, and system upgrades.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) announced that the resumption comes after a thorough inspection and modernization process aimed at improving passenger safety, comfort, and operational efficiency.

In a statement released on Sunday, October 26, by Callistus Unyimadu, the NRC’s Chief Public Relations Officer, the corporation emphasized that the temporary suspension of the Warri–Itakpe Train Service was a strategic move to carry out comprehensive system overhauls.

The maintenance included rail track alignment, rolling stock servicing, and checks on communication systems to ensure safer and smoother train operations across the corridor.

“The temporary suspension was necessary to carry out critical repairs, maintenance, and system checks on the track and rolling stock to ensure the comfort, reliability, and safety of passengers,” the statement said.

The NRC disclosed that online bookings for the Warri–Itakpe Train Service will reopen by 12 noon on Monday, October 27, 2025, allowing passengers to make early reservations ahead of the resumption date. Travelers can book tickets through the official NRC portal — https://nrc-fane.ng — or at designated railway stations nationwide.

Unyimadu added that this digital booking platform reflects the corporation’s ongoing efforts to modernize service delivery, reduce waiting times, and enhance the overall customer experience.

Passengers are encouraged to secure their tickets early to avoid last-minute congestion at the stations.

According to the statement, the Warri–Itakpe Train Service will now operate with seven improved coaches, comprising six standard-class and one business-class coach.

The upgraded coaches have been redesigned for greater passenger comfort, featuring ergonomic seating, enhanced ventilation, improved lighting, and refurbished restrooms.

A new operational timetable will be released on Monday, October 27. The schedule will include temporary speed restrictions (TSR) on specific sections of the line to enable engineers to monitor performance and ensure maximum safety during the first phase of resumed operations.

The NRC explained that the temporary speed limits are standard safety procedures following major maintenance work and will gradually be lifted once system stability is confirmed.

“We are introducing speed restrictions initially to ensure proper monitoring of the tracks and equipment. This is part of our commitment to safe rail operations,” the NRC said.

Unyimadu expressed the NRC’s gratitude to passengers, freight clients, and other stakeholders for their understanding during the suspension period. He acknowledged that the break might have caused inconvenience but assured that the outcome would significantly enhance future rail experiences.

“The corporation sincerely apologises to its esteemed passengers and stakeholders for the inconveniences experienced during the period of suspension and appreciates their patience and understanding,” he added.

He reiterated that the Warri–Itakpe Train Service remains a flagship intercity line that plays a critical role in Nigeria’s transportation framework.

The ongoing improvements demonstrate NRC’s long-term vision to deliver safe, efficient, and sustainable railway services across the country.

NRC Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, reaffirmed the corporation’s unwavering commitment to maintaining safe and reliable rail transport. He said the Warri–Itakpe Train Service symbolizes Nigeria’s renewed drive toward rail modernization and regional integration.

According to Opeifa, the corporation has introduced a series of operational reforms, including predictive maintenance systems, crew retraining, and technology-based monitoring to ensure continuous service improvement.

These steps align with the broader national agenda to strengthen transport infrastructure and promote economic growth.

“The Warri–Itakpe Train Service is vital to our mission of connecting regions and promoting industrial and social development. We remain dedicated to making it safer, faster, and more efficient,” Opeifa affirmed.

He noted that the recent technical upgrades were conducted in line with global safety standards and are expected to extend the service life of the locomotives and tracks. He also hinted that similar modernization projects would soon be replicated on other key railway routes across Nigeria.

The Warri–Itakpe Train Service connects Delta, Edo, and Kogi States, serving as one of Nigeria’s most important intercity rail corridors.

The route provides a direct link between the South-South and North-Central regions, facilitating trade, logistics, and passenger movement. It also plays a vital role in the transportation of goods such as petroleum products, steel, and agricultural produce.

Since its inception, the line has been instrumental in reducing road traffic, cutting travel times, and providing a safer alternative to road transport, which is often hindered by insecurity and poor road conditions.

Experts in the transport sector have lauded the NRC for prioritizing infrastructure maintenance and modernization, noting that the decision will foster economic integration and improve national logistics efficiency.

Economic analysts also observed that consistent investment in rail transport could reduce Nigeria’s overdependence on road haulage, lower logistics costs, and boost domestic trade. The Warri–Itakpe corridor, they emphasized, is a critical component of that vision.

With the upcoming resumption of services, passengers and logistics operators have expressed optimism that the upgraded rail system will restore public confidence in train travel.

Many commuters see the Warri–Itakpe Train Service as a reliable, affordable, and environmentally friendly option compared to road transport.

The NRC has assured the public of improved punctuality, enhanced customer support, and strict adherence to safety regulations.

The corporation’s new approach includes increased station surveillance, better crowd management, and enhanced digital ticketing systems to streamline operations.

As October 29 approaches, anticipation continues to build among travelers eager to experience the improved service.

For the NRC, this resumption represents more than a return to routine — it marks a renewed commitment to innovation, passenger satisfaction, and sustainable transportation development in Nigeria.
