US immigrant visa suspension affects Nigeria, 74 other countries worldwide

The US immigrant visa suspension has halted processing for 75 countries, including Nigeria, as Washington reviews immigration rules and screening procedures.

The US immigrant visa suspension announced on Wednesday has sparked widespread concern across several regions of the world, following confirmation that the United States has halted the processing of immigrant visas for applicants from 75 countries, including Nigeria.

According to a statement issued by a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, the decision forms part of a broader reassessment of America’s immigration framework.

The spokesperson explained that immigrant visa processing has been temporarily paused for affected countries while authorities conduct an extensive review of screening standards and national interest considerations.

Although the announcement did not initially provide a detailed list of countries, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt later shed more light on the scope of the measure.

In a post on X, she revealed that the US immigrant visa suspension cuts across countries with varied political, economic and diplomatic relationships with Washington.

Among those named were Somalia, Russia and Iran. Leavitt also referenced a Fox News report which identified additional countries impacted by the immigrant visa freeze, including Brazil, Egypt, Ghana and Thailand.

The inclusion of nations traditionally viewed as friendly partners of the United States has intensified debate about the broader implications of the policy.

Nigeria’s inclusion in the suspension has drawn particular attention, given the country’s long-standing migration ties with the United States.

Thousands of Nigerians apply for immigrant visas annually through family reunification, employment-based programmes and diversity visa pathways.

The pause in processing has therefore raised concerns among applicants who have waited years for approvals.

U.S. officials insist that the move does not amount to a permanent ban. Instead, they argue that the US immigrant visa suspension is designed to allow time for a comprehensive evaluation of how immigrant admissions align with domestic economic and security priorities.

One official noted that the freeze would remain in place until the government is satisfied that new immigrants would not “extract wealth” from American taxpayers.

The decision aligns with the broader immigration posture of President Donald Trump, who has consistently advocated for stricter controls on immigration.

Throughout his political career, Trump has openly expressed scepticism about large-scale migration from non-European countries, while signalling a preference for immigrants from parts of Europe, particularly Scandinavia.

His past remarks about Somali immigrants, which drew international criticism, have resurfaced in public discourse following the announcement.

Analysts say the inclusion of Somalia in the visa suspension reflects long-standing policy positions rather than isolated administrative decisions.

Despite the sweeping nature of the measure, the U.S. government has clarified that the suspension applies strictly to immigrant visas.

Non-immigrant visa categories, such as tourist, business, student and short-term work visas, are not affected by the policy.

However, officials have confirmed that vetting requirements across all visa categories will become more rigorous.

Under the revised approach, applicants may be subjected to deeper background checks, including reviews of social media activity and digital footprints.

This enhanced scrutiny, the State Department says, is intended to strengthen national security and ensure compliance with U.S. laws.

Immigration experts note that while visa suspensions are not unprecedented, the scale of the current US immigrant visa suspension is unusually broad.

Covering 75 countries across multiple continents, the decision is likely to have diplomatic, economic and humanitarian consequences if it extends for a prolonged period.

For many prospective immigrants, the uncertainty is the most difficult aspect. With no clear timeline provided for the resumption of processing, families awaiting reunification and professionals seeking employment opportunities in the U.S. are left in limbo.

In Nigeria and other affected countries, immigration consultants report a surge in inquiries from worried applicants seeking clarification.

Many fear that prolonged delays could invalidate documents, medical examinations and other time-sensitive requirements associated with immigrant visa applications.

As of now, the U.S. State Department has not indicated when the review process will be concluded.

Officials maintain that the suspension will remain in force indefinitely until the reassessment of immigration procedures is completed.

While the administration frames the policy as a necessary safeguard, critics argue that the US immigrant visa suspension risks undermining America’s image as a nation built by immigrants.

Supporters, on the other hand, believe it reflects a commitment to prioritising domestic economic interests.

For affected applicants worldwide, the coming months will be crucial in determining whether the suspension is a short-term administrative pause or a signal of deeper, long-lasting changes to U.S. immigration policy.
