The United Kingdom is considering sending mine-hunting drones to the Strait of Hormuz to help clear explosives from the critical shipping route, as British ministers seek to avoid escalating tensions in the Middle East conflict.
Officials in Whitehall are reportedly cautious about deploying naval warships, even after a request from US President Donald Trump for allied support in securing the waterway.
Instead, the UK government is exploring the option of aerial minesweeping drones that could identify and neutralise sea mines without placing naval crews directly in harm’s way.
The proposal reflects concerns that sending large warships into the already volatile region could further inflame the crisis and potentially draw Britain deeper into the conflict.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints, with a significant portion of global oil exports passing through the narrow waterway each day.
