Suspected bandits nabbed in coordinated operation at Akure Airport

Authorities have confirmed the arrest of four suspected bandits around Akure Airport in Ondo State after a coordinated security operation involving aviation security personnel, military officers, police operatives, and local security groups.

The incident occurred after intelligence reports alerted officials to the presence of suspicious individuals close to the airport’s perimeter.

The development was disclosed by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), the government agency responsible for managing many of Nigeria’s airports.

According to FAAN, the suspects were apprehended following a swift and collaborative search operation aimed at protecting critical aviation infrastructure and ensuring the safety of airport users.

The announcement was made in an official statement by FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire.

He explained that the Akure Airport security team received an urgent alert indicating that a group of unidentified individuals had been spotted behind the airport fence, in an area leading towards the nearby Eleyewo Community.

According to Agbebire, the report immediately triggered a security response.

Aviation security officers stationed at Akure Airport quickly mobilised and reached out to other security agencies operating in the area.

Within a short time, a joint operation was launched to search the surrounding environment and locate the individuals seen around the restricted zone.

The security team involved in the operation included personnel from FAAN’s Aviation Security unit as well as members of the Nigerian Air Force, Nigerian Army, and the Nigeria Police Force.

Local security outfits also joined the effort to comb the area and prevent the suspects from escaping.

Agbebire explained that as the operation progressed, some of the individuals reportedly attempted to flee when they noticed the heavy presence of security forces around the Akure Airport environment.

However, the combined efforts of the operatives made it difficult for them to escape the area. Eventually, four of the suspects were captured and taken into custody.

Following their arrest, the suspects were handed over to the police for further questioning.

Investigators are currently working to determine their motives for being around the airport perimeter and whether they are connected to any criminal network operating within the region.

Officials say the investigation will also examine whether the suspects were planning any illegal activities around Akure Airport or if they had been monitoring movements in the area prior to the operation.

Authorities stressed that such incidents are taken seriously because airports are considered sensitive national infrastructure that must be protected at all times.

FAAN commended the prompt response and collaboration between different security agencies involved in the operation.

The agency noted that the successful arrest demonstrated the effectiveness of intelligence sharing and coordinated action among aviation security personnel, the military, the police, and community-based security groups.

Among those praised for their support were members of the regional security network, Amotekun Corps, as well as local vigilante groups that operate within communities around Akure Airport.

Their familiarity with the terrain reportedly helped security operatives narrow down the location of the suspects more quickly.

The agency emphasised that maintaining strong security around airports remains a priority.

Airports are not only transportation hubs but also critical national assets that require constant monitoring to prevent unlawful entry, vandalism, or potential security threats.

In addition to responding to incidents, FAAN said the federal government is taking steps to strengthen preventive security measures at airports across the country.

The agency revealed that the government, through the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, has initiated projects aimed at improving security infrastructure in airport environments.

One of the major improvements currently underway involves the installation of modern perimeter fencing and upgraded surveillance systems designed to detect intrusions early.

These security upgrades are expected to enhance the ability of authorities to monitor restricted zones and prevent unauthorized access to airport facilities.

According to FAAN, the security enhancement program is being implemented in phases and will cover several airports nationwide.

The improvements will include better lighting, advanced monitoring equipment, and reinforced barriers to protect sensitive areas.

Officials said work on some of these projects has already started in certain locations, and additional airports will gradually benefit from the initiative as implementation progresses.

FAAN also reassured travellers and residents of communities located around Akure Airport that security agencies remain vigilant.

The authority stressed that safeguarding passengers, aviation workers, and surrounding communities is a key responsibility that it takes seriously.

The agency encouraged members of the public to continue reporting suspicious movements or unusual activities around airport environments.

According to FAAN, timely information from residents and airport users can significantly help security agencies respond quickly to potential threats.

As investigations continue, authorities say the arrest of the suspects demonstrates the importance of cooperation among security institutions and local communities.

The incident has also highlighted the need for constant vigilance in protecting aviation facilities across Nigeria.

With the ongoing security improvements and coordinated efforts among agencies, FAAN expressed confidence that Akure Airport and other airport facilities in the country will remain safe and secure for passengers, staff, and the general public.
