Trump’s racist video of the Obamas sparks bipartisan outrage as GOP Senator calls for deletion

Trump’s racist video of the Obamas has ignited a political firestorm in Washington, drawing sharp condemnation from Democrats and prompting a rare public rebuke from within the Republican party, as a senior GOP senator called on Donald Trump to delete the offensive post and apologise.

The controversy erupted after Trump shared the video on his Truth Social platform during a late-night posting spree.

The clip used racist imagery involving former president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama, quickly sparking outrage among lawmakers, civil rights advocates and political commentators who described the content as demeaning, inflammatory and unfit for someone who has held the highest office in the United States.

Senator Tim Scott of South Carolina, the only Black Republican currently serving in the US Senate, emerged as the most prominent Republican voice condemning the post.

Scott said he was praying the video was fake, describing it as the most racist thing he had seen associated with the White House, and stated plainly that Trump should remove it.

His remarks marked a significant moment of dissent within a party where criticism of Trump is often muted or carefully worded.

Democratic leaders reacted with fury, accusing Trump of engaging in open racism and demanding accountability from Republican lawmakers who have continued to support him.

House minority leader Hakeem Jeffries denounced Trump in blistering terms, describing his behaviour as vile and unhinged while praising the Obamas as patriotic Americans who represented the best of the country.

Jeffries questioned why senior Republicans continued to remain silent in the face of what he said was unmistakable bigotry.

In the Senate, Democratic leader Chuck Schumer echoed those sentiments, calling the video racist and abhorrent and urging Trump to delete the post immediately and apologise to Barack and Michelle Obama.

Schumer said the episode reflected insecurity and resentment rather than leadership, warning that such behaviour further degraded political discourse and undermined democratic norms.
As the backlash intensified, other lawmakers joined the calls for action.

Republican congressman Mike Lawler of New York, considered a moderate within his party, said the video was wrong and incredibly offensive and should be taken down without delay.

His comments highlighted growing discomfort among some Republicans who fear Trump’s repeated controversies continue to alienate moderate voters and damage the party’s standing with minority communities.

Outside Capitol Hill, condemnation poured in from activists, former officials and commentators. Several prominent figures described the video as part of a long-standing pattern of racist rhetoric linked to Trump, arguing that sharing such material demeaned both its targets and the presidency itself.

Critics said the post reinforced concerns that Trump continues to rely on provocation and division to energise his political base.

The White House attempted to deflect the criticism, suggesting the video originated from an online meme and accusing opponents of engaging in manufactured outrage.

In a statement, officials linked the clip to a longer internet video portraying Trump positively while depicting Democrats as animals, urging the media to focus on issues they claimed mattered more to Americans.

The response failed to calm the controversy, with critics arguing that reposting such content carried clear racial implications regardless of its source.

The episode unfolded amid a broader burst of activity on Trump’s Truth Social account, where he posted dozens of messages over several hours.

Alongside the racist video, Trump repeated false claims about the 2020 election and amplified grievances against political opponents, drawing renewed scrutiny over his online behaviour and its impact on public discourse.

The Obamas did not immediately respond publicly, but former aides and allies strongly condemned the post. Ben Rhodes, a senior adviser during the Obama administration, described Trump as a stain on American history and said future generations would remember the Obamas with respect while viewing Trump’s actions as a cautionary tale about racism and demagoguery.

As of Friday evening, the video remained online despite mounting pressure from both parties. The growing calls for its removal placed Republican leaders in an increasingly uncomfortable position, forcing them to decide whether to condemn the post or risk being seen as complicit through silence.

The incident adds to a long list of controversies surrounding Trump’s rhetoric and conduct, underscoring how race continues to play a central role in his political identity.

Whether the backlash leads to the video’s removal or further entrenches partisan divisions remains uncertain, but the episode has once again exposed the deep fractures shaping American politics.
