The Alex Pretti killing has drawn national and international attention after former president Barack Obama and former first lady Michelle Obama condemned the fatal shooting and demanded a full federal investigation into the actions of immigration officers in Minneapolis.
The shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37-year-old registered nurse and US citizen, occurred during a federal immigration enforcement operation and has since ignited protests, political backlash, and questions about accountability within federal law enforcement agencies.
Video footage from the scene shows federal agents removing a handgun from Pretti’s waistband holster before he was fatally shot, contradicting early claims that he posed an immediate armed threat to officers.
Witnesses have stated that Pretti was not handling the firearm at the time and that he was legally permitted to carry a gun in public under Minnesota law with the appropriate documentation.
In a joint statement released on Sunday, Barack and Michelle Obama described the Alex Pretti killing as “a heartbreaking tragedy” and warned that it should serve as “a wake-up call to every American, regardless of party”.
They said federal immigration agents were increasingly operating in ways that lacked transparency, accountability, and adherence to democratic norms.
“For weeks now people across the country have been rightly outraged by the spectacle of masked ICE recruits and other federal agents acting with impunity,” the Obamas said.
They added that these tactics appeared “designed to intimidate, harass, provoke and endanger the residents of a major American city”.
The Obamas said such actions had now resulted in the fatal shootings of two US citizens in Minneapolis, naming both Pretti and Renee Good.
They accused senior administration officials of escalating rhetoric before any independent investigation had been completed, despite video evidence that appeared to contradict official explanations.
The former president and first lady urged Americans to support peaceful protests, describing them as an essential expression of civic responsibility.
“They are a timely reminder that ultimately it’s up to each of us as citizens to speak out against injustice, protect our basic freedoms and hold our government accountable,” they said.
The Alex Pretti killing prompted condemnation across party lines, including from former president Bill Clinton, who described the events surrounding the shooting as “horrible scenes”.
“All of this is unacceptable and should have been avoided,” Clinton said. “At every turn, the people in charge have lied to us and told us not to believe what we’ve seen with our own eyes.”
Republican senator Bill Cassidy said the credibility of federal immigration officers and the Department of Homeland Security was now at stake.
“There must be a full joint federal and state investigation,” Cassidy said. “We can trust the American people with the truth.”
Democratic lawmakers intensified pressure on the administration, calling for federal immigration authorities to withdraw from Minnesota pending the outcome of an investigation.
Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez said Congress had a responsibility to act, stating: “We have a responsibility to protect Americans from tyranny.”
Senate minority leader Chuck Schumer announced that Senate Democrats would not provide votes for continued Department of Homeland Security funding if immigration enforcement spending remained unchanged.
Senators Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota and Adam Schiff of California said they would vote against DHS funding under current conditions.
“When they’re killing two constituents in my state, and taking children from their parents, I am not voting for this funding,” Klobuchar said.
She cited multiple incidents involving federal immigration officers that had eroded public trust and intensified scrutiny.
Schiff said he would not approve additional funding, arguing that immigration agencies were operating without sufficient oversight.
Schumer warned that failure to reach a compromise could result in a partial government shutdown at the end of January.
Connecticut governor Mikie Sherrill compared the conduct of masked federal agents to secret police forces, saying the situation extended far beyond immigration policy.
“This is about a basically Stasi-type force of secret police that wear masks, are unidentifiable, and unaccountable,” Sherrill said.
At makeshift memorials near the shooting site, mourners gathered holding signs reading “ICE out” and “We all saw it”.
Pretti’s parents, Michael and Susan Pretti, demanded transparency and condemned official statements about their son’s death.
“We are heartbroken but also very angry,” they said. “The sickening lies told about our son are reprehensible and disgusting.”
Their statement followed claims by homeland security secretary Kristi Noem that Pretti had brandished a gun before agents fired what she described as “defensive shots”.
Those claims have been contradicted by multiple videos and sworn witness testimony.
Klobuchar said official descriptions of the Alex Pretti killing were “simply not true”.
“I just keep thinking, your eyes don’t lie,” she said. “Law enforcement is based on trust, and we have had a total breakdown of trust.”
Deputy attorney general Todd Blanche said an investigation was under way but cautioned against relying solely on video evidence.
“We don’t know what ICE saw or heard in the minutes leading up to what we just watched,” Blanche said.
He also claimed protesters were obstructing enforcement operations, a description disputed by demonstrators and local officials.
Border patrol commander Gregory Bovino defended the agents involved, saying investigators would establish the full facts.
“You don’t know he was unarmed,” Bovino said. “That’s why we investigate.”
When asked whether he was blaming the victim, Bovino said, “The victims are the border patrol agents.”
Minnesota officials disputed federal claims that the operation targeted a dangerous individual with a significant criminal history.
State Department of Corrections records contradicted that characterization, undermining the justification for the enforcement action.
A federal judge ordered the administration to preserve all evidence related to the Alex Pretti killing after Minnesota officials filed suit.
Attorney general Keith Ellison said the state was demanding “a full, impartial, and transparent investigation” and described it as “non-negotiable”.
Minneapolis police chief Brian O’Hara said federal officers initially impeded state investigators from accessing the scene.
President Trump accused Minnesota officials of inciting unrest, while vice-president JD Vance described the protests as “engineered chaos”.
As vigils continued across Minneapolis, the Alex Pretti killing remained at the center of a growing national reckoning over federal immigration enforcement, accountability, and the use of lethal force.
