Trump threatens to bomb Oman as Iran talks stall

Trump rejects Iran deal extension

Trump threatens to bomb Oman as tensions with Iran intensify, with the United States rejecting an extension of an interim agreement while negotiations remain stalled over nuclear restrictions and shipping.

President Donald Trump said Iran would not accept the agreement he considers necessary to end the conflict, insisting Tehran must surrender and abandon any pursuit of nuclear weapons immediately.

Reuters reported that Trump made the remarks Monday as the deadline for a June memorandum approached, highlighting the widening diplomatic gap between Washington and Tehran during negotiations between both sides.

Trump said the United States was not seeking to extend the interim arrangement, despite the agreement originally allowing both sides sixty days to negotiate a broader and potentially lasting settlement.

The memorandum called for an immediate and permanent end to military operations across fronts, but the arrangement quickly deteriorated after Trump declared it over in July, according to officials.

Strait of Hormuz tensions deepen

Trump’s latest warning comes as Iran and Oman continue diplomatic efforts focused on restoring commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial route for global energy supplies worldwide.

Before the conflict disrupted traffic, the Strait of Hormuz carried roughly one fifth of global oil and liquefied natural gas supplies, making renewed disruption a major economic concern globally.

Trump’s comments have therefore placed Oman in an unusually difficult position, as Muscat attempts to facilitate negotiations while avoiding direct confrontation with Washington or Tehran during the escalating crisis.

Speaking to reporters, Trump maintained that Iran must accept conditions designed to prevent it from developing a nuclear weapon, describing that objective as central to American policy right now.

He separately told Fox News that Iran should raise a surrender signal, saying Tehran should put up the “white flag of surrender” as pressure from Washington continued.

Trump issues warning to Oman

The president also delivered an extraordinary warning involving Oman, saying, “If Oman gets in the way, we’ll bomb” it, although he later softened his public tone considerably afterward.

Asked whether he had lost patience with Oman, Trump said he had not, while criticizing its conduct and asserting that the United States could handle the situation during the crisis.

The conflicting messages underscore the uncertainty surrounding efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, where prolonged restrictions could affect energy markets, shipping costs, insurance premiums and consumer prices.

Trump’s position also reflects domestic political pressure, as higher fuel prices and the unpopular conflict create additional challenges ahead of America’s November midterm elections later this year.

However, Trump rejected suggestions that the approaching elections were shaping his strategy toward Iran, saying, “Midterms have nothing to do with my thinking” during his remarks Monday afternoon.

Trump Iran war strategy remains unchanged

Instead, Trump reiterated that preventing an Iranian nuclear weapon remains his principal objective, repeating a position he has used consistently to justify America’s military campaign against Tehran in the region.

In a Truth Social post, Trump said the number one goal would always be preventing Iran from possessing a nuclear weapon, reinforcing the administration’s justification for continued pressure.

The diplomatic impasse comes as both countries face difficult choices, with Washington demanding substantial concessions while Tehran confronts military, economic and strategic pressure from the United States.

Oman’s mediation role could become increasingly important because the country has maintained channels with Iran while also engaging Washington, positioning Muscat as a potential bridge between adversaries during talks.

Yet Trump’s threat against Oman risks complicating that mediation, potentially making future discussions more difficult if Omani officials believe their diplomatic efforts could trigger military retaliation for parties.

US Iran negotiations face uncertainty

The Strait of Hormuz remains particularly sensitive because any sustained disruption could reverberate beyond the Middle East, affecting energy markets and economies already confronting elevated costs worldwide.

For Iran, the confrontation carries significant consequences as pressure increases over its nuclear programme, economic stability and ability to maintain strategic influence across the wider Middle East.

For the United States, continued conflict presents its own risks, including higher energy prices, diplomatic isolation, military commitments and growing political scrutiny as the midterm elections approach.

Trump has insisted that his strategy is driven by security concerns rather than electoral calculations, but the consequences of the conflict could still influence public opinion nationwide today.

With the interim agreement effectively stalled, the immediate challenge is finding a diplomatic path that addresses Washington’s nuclear demands while restoring stability around the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Unless Iran and the United States can bridge their differences, Trump’s latest warning suggests tensions could deepen, leaving Oman, regional governments and global markets watching closely for the next move.
