Tinubu holds private talks with Kano Gov amid political realignment speculation

A closed-door meeting between President Tinubu and the Kano governor has reignited speculation over possible political realignments ahead of 2027.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday received the Governor of Kano State, Abba Kabir Yusuf, for a private discussion at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, a meeting that has continued to generate political interest.

Kano Governor

The Kano State governor arrived at the State House a few minutes after 4:00 p.m. and was personally ushered into the President’s office by the Chief of Staff to the President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila.

The engagement was held behind closed doors, with no official briefing released immediately afterward.

The timing of the meeting has fueled fresh conversations within political circles, especially amid ongoing speculation about Governor Yusuf’s future in the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), the platform on which he emerged victorious in the last governorship election.

For weeks, rumours have persisted that the governor may be considering a switch to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

These reports, however, have been firmly played down by the NNPP’s national leader and former Kano governor, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso.

He has repeatedly stated that he neither endorsed nor approved any plan for Governor Yusuf to defect, maintaining that such claims are unfounded.

Sources familiar with the unfolding political dynamics say discussions around a possible realignment have been ongoing quietly but may have hit obstacles.

Among the issues reportedly under debate is whether the governor would receive assurances regarding his political future, including the possibility of securing a guaranteed ticket ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The uncertainty has also had ripple effects within Kano’s political space, with indications of growing strain between some supporters of Governor Yusuf and loyalists of Senator Kwankwaso, who has remained a key political figure in the state.

Although no official link has been established, many political observers believe the governor’s meeting with President Tinubu may be connected to these wider political calculations. For now, both sides have remained silent on the substance of the talks.
