Sunday Igboho appeals to Nigerian ambassadors to project positive Nigeria global image

Yoruba nation campaigner, Sunday Igboho, has called on Nigeria’s newly appointed diplomats to work in close cooperation with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in order to enhance the country’s reputation and influence on the global stage.

In a statement released at the weekend, the activist stressed that the new Nigerian ambassadors must approach their assignments with a strong sense of responsibility.

According to him, their diplomatic roles provide a valuable opportunity to rebuild international confidence in the country and promote Nigeria’s interests across different regions of the world.

Nigerian ambassadors

The Yoruba leader explained that the success of the Nigerian ambassadors will depend largely on their ability to combine professional competence with patriotism.

He noted that many of the individuals selected for diplomatic postings possess significant experience in governance, leadership and international affairs, which should be used effectively in their various host countries.

Igboho further emphasized that improving the Nigeria global image requires cooperation between government representatives abroad and citizens at home.

He encouraged Nigerians to always project the country positively regardless of political disagreements, ethnic differences or religious affiliations.

According to him, while the country continues to face economic and social difficulties, maintaining a strong national image internationally remains essential.

He added that diplomatic representatives must work to ensure that Nigeria is viewed as a reliable partner in trade, development and international cooperation.

The call came shortly after the administration of President Tinubu announced a new round of ambassadorial appointments aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic missions across several continents.

The announcement was made in an official statement by the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, who confirmed that 65 ambassadors had been assigned to various countries and international missions.

Among the prominent names listed in the announcement is former Minister of Aviation Femi Fani-Kayode, who has been designated as Nigeria’s ambassador to Germany.

Other appointments include former Minister of Health Isaac Adewole, who will represent Nigeria in Canada, and former presidential aide Reno Omokri, who has been assigned to Mexico.

Also on the list is retired Lieutenant-General Abdulrahman Dambazau, who will serve as ambassador to China.

Former Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency Ayodeji Oke was posted to France, while Kayode Are will head Nigeria’s diplomatic mission in the United States.

In addition, Chioma Ohakim has been appointed ambassador to Poland.

Reacting to the development, Sunday Igboho described the appointments as an important step toward strengthening Nigeria’s diplomatic engagement with other nations.

He noted that capable and experienced representatives are needed to manage international relationships and promote national interests.

He particularly expressed appreciation to President Tinubu for appointing Fani-Kayode as ambassador to Germany.

According to him, the former minister’s experience in politics, communication and international relations could prove valuable in advancing Nigeria’s diplomatic missions in Europe.

Igboho also acknowledged the contributions of the Olugbon of Orile Igbon, Francis Olushola Alao, and the President’s lawyer, Oluwole Afolabi (SAN), whom he credited with supporting the process that led to the ambassadorial nomination.

In his message, the activist urged the Nigerian ambassadors not to see their appointments as mere political recognition but as an opportunity to serve the country diligently.

He said the responsibility of representing Nigeria abroad requires discipline, diplomacy and a clear understanding of global political and economic dynamics.

He further stated that improving the Nigeria global image will depend on the ability of diplomats to build strong bilateral relations, attract foreign investments and create partnerships that benefit Nigeria’s economy and development.

According to Igboho, Nigeria’s diplomatic missions must also focus on protecting the interests of Nigerians living abroad, ensuring that citizens receive adequate support and representation in foreign countries.

He concluded by urging the newly appointed envoys to justify the confidence placed in them by President Tinubu and the Nigerian people.

By working together and promoting unity at home and abroad, he said, the ambassadors can play a key role in strengthening Nigeria’s international reputation and advancing its national interests.
