Army officers raise concerns over special promotion of Tinubu’s ADC

Growing unease trails the special promotion of President Tinubu’s ADC to Brigadier General, as Nigerian Army officers raise concerns over seniority, fairness, and tradition.

Tensions are reportedly rising within the Nigerian Army following the special elevation of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Aide-de-Camp, Colonel Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf, to the rank of Brigadier General.

Tinubu ADC

Officers across the service are said to be expressing unease over the promotion, viewing it as an unusual departure from standard procedures and long-established norms governing military advancement.

Multiple senior military sources say the decision has unsettled officers who have spent years progressing through the ranks in line with clearly defined career benchmarks.

These officers argue that adherence to such standards is essential for maintaining discipline, morale, and institutional credibility within the armed forces.

Presidential Approval and Official Communication

The ADC promotion was formally approved by the President and conveyed to the Chief of Army Staff through a letter issued by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), headed by Nuhu Ribadu.

The letter confirmed that Yusuf’s elevation to Brigadier General would take effect from December 12, 2025, and that he would retain his role as ADC to the Commander-in-Chief.

While the promotion followed presidential authority, sources within the Army say the manner and timing of the decision have raised questions about whether established military procedures were adequately respected.

Concerns Over Professional Requirements

One of the major grievances centres on professional military education.

Officers familiar with the promotion system note that advancement to the rank of Brigadier General traditionally requires completion of key professional courses, including the Army War College and the National Defence College.

According to senior officers, Colonel Yusuf, a member of the 52 Regular Course, has reportedly not attended either institution.

This, they argue, places him ahead of officers from earlier regular courses who have completed both operational and strategic-level training and have waited patiently for promotion.

“This is not just about one officer,” a source explained.

“It is about the system. When officers who have done everything required are bypassed, it creates resentment and weakens confidence in the promotion process.”

Unusual Retention as ADC

Beyond the promotion itself, the decision to retain Yusuf as ADC after becoming a Brigadier General has further deepened unease.

Within military tradition, ADC roles are typically reserved for junior officers, not general officers.

“A General performing ADC duties is highly unusual,” a senior officer noted.

“It sends the wrong signal and blurs the line between ceremonial proximity and operational responsibility.”

Many officers reportedly see this arrangement as symbolising preferential treatment rather than merit-based advancement, further fuelling frustration across the ranks.

Historical Precedents and Comparisons

Critics of the ADC promotion have drawn attention to historical precedents, noting that no Nigerian president since independence has granted such accelerated elevation to an ADC while retaining the officer in that role.

Some officers also referenced past administrations to highlight contrasting practices.

During the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, one of his early ADCs reportedly had to step aside from ADC duties to attend the National Defence College before becoming eligible for promotion.

That officer remained at the rank of Colonel for the mandatory five-year period stipulated under military service regulations.

“This is how it has always been done,” a source recalled.

“You earn your promotion by meeting requirements, not by proximity to power.”

Allegations of Preferential Access

The controversy has also revived broader concerns about influence and access within Nigeria’s security architecture.

Officers have drawn parallels between Yusuf’s promotion and other security appointments close to the President that reportedly benefited from accelerated career progression.

One source argued that while proximity to leadership can offer exposure and responsibility, it should not translate into exceptional privileges that undermine institutional fairness.

“Being close to the President should not override decades of professional standards,” the officer said.

“Otherwise, the message to the rest of the Army is deeply damaging.”

Morale and Institutional Stability at Stake

Senior officers warn that unresolved discontent over the Brigadier General controversy could have long-term consequences for morale and cohesion within the Nigerian Army.

Promotion, they stress, is not merely about rank but about trust in the system.

Some sources disclosed that quiet appeals are being made to the Chief of Army Staff to advise the President to reconsider or review the decision in order to preserve internal harmony.

“The Army runs on structure and order,” a source emphasised.

“Once officers believe those principles no longer apply equally, discipline begins to erode.”

A Broader Debate on Military Professionalism

Beyond one individual, the unfolding Nigerian Army promotion crisis has ignited a broader debate about professionalism, civilian influence, and the preservation of military tradition.

Officers argue that safeguarding clear career pathways is essential to preventing politicisation of the armed forces.

As discussions continue behind closed doors, many within the service say the issue is no longer just about the Tinubu ADC promotion, but about whether long-standing military values will remain intact in the face of political privilege.
