Armed violence once again struck rural settlements in the Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, where suspected armed groups identified as bandits launched coordinated assaults on multiple communities, leaving at least four people dead and several others injured.

The affected communities—Lanta, Tunga, and Bagna in Erena Ward—came under heavy attack on Tuesday, April 7, 2026.

The violence reportedly began in the morning hours at about 10:30 a.m. in Bagna before spreading quickly to neighbouring settlements.

Residents described the incident as sudden and overwhelming, saying the attackers, widely referred to as bandits, arrived in large groups on motorcycles, moving through the villages with little to no resistance.

The coordinated nature of the assault allowed the bandits to operate for several hours, causing panic and mass displacement.

A local source in Bagna disclosed that although initial reports confirmed three bodies had been recovered, the final death toll could rise as search efforts continue.

According to the source, the bandits moved from one community to another, leaving destruction and fear in their wake, while many injured victims were rushed to nearby areas for emergency care.

The witness further explained that many residents were forced to abandon their homes and flee toward Erena town, which is currently considered the safest nearby location.

The ongoing insecurity has left families separated and communities deserted as the bandits continued their movement across rural routes.

“We have recovered some bodies, but the situation is still unstable. Many people are missing, and others are injured.

“The bandits operated freely for hours before any form of response could be organized,” the source said, stressing the urgency for government intervention.

The attack has renewed concerns over repeated incursions by armed groups in Shiroro and surrounding local government areas, where rural communities have long struggled with insecurity.

Many residents believe the latest attack reflects a growing boldness among bandits, who have continued to exploit difficult terrain and weak security coverage in remote areas.

In response to the incident, the Niger State Commissioner for Homeland Security, Maurice Bello Magaji, confirmed that the government had received credible intelligence regarding the attack.

He assured that security agencies have been activated to assess the situation and respond accordingly.

“Yes, we are aware of the attack. The state has received credible information and is working closely with security forces to address the situation,” he stated.

This latest outbreak of violence adds to a growing list of rural attacks in northern Nigeria, where bandits continue to target isolated communities, often leaving behind death, displacement, and destruction.

Security analysts warn that unless stronger preventive measures are implemented, such bandits attacks may persist and further destabilize rural life in the region.

Authorities have urged residents to remain vigilant while efforts continue to restore order and track the movements of the attackers believed to be responsible for the latest violence.
