SEC warns against AI-Generated investment scams

SEC Warns Against AI-Generated Investment Scams

Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has raised fresh alarm over the surge of AI-generated investment scams targeting unsuspecting Nigerians.

The apex capital market regulator warned that fraudsters are increasingly deploying artificial intelligence tools, including deepfake videos and AI-generated content, to deceive investors with promises of unrealistic profits.

In a statement released on Monday, the Commission disclosed that several unregistered platforms—such as CBEX, Silverkuun, and TOFRO—are actively advertising AI-powered trading schemes.

These schemes are designed to lure people with fabricated claims of guaranteed returns, celebrity endorsements, and flashy testimonials.

“These platforms are not licensed by the SEC, yet they mislead the public with deceptive marketing tactics,” the Commission explained.

“They pose significant risks to investors, which is why we have consistently issued disclaimers against their activities.”

How AI-Generated Content Fuels Fraud

According to the regulator, scammers have now evolved beyond traditional Ponzi methods by using AI-generated investment scams to make their operations look credible.

Manipulated videos featuring popular politicians, movie stars, and TV hosts are being circulated across Facebook, Instagram, and Telegram channels, creating a false impression that these platforms are trustworthy.

The Commission noted that these deepfake endorsements are not only convincing but also difficult to detect, making them a potent tool in the hands of cybercriminals.

“AI-generated testimonials are designed to bypass normal detection methods, hence the urgent need for technology-driven regulation and public vigilance,” SEC said.

Industry experts warn that the sophistication of such schemes could further erode trust in Nigeria’s financial markets if left unchecked.

SEC Strengthens Oversight to Combat AI Scams

In response, the SEC revealed that it has begun deploying advanced surveillance systems capable of detecting fraudulent activities in real time.

These systems will allow the Commission to move from reactive measures to predictive oversight, ensuring that scams are identified and neutralized before they spread widely.

Furthermore, the regulator is collaborating closely with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU) to enhance intelligence sharing and joint enforcement.

This partnership is expected to create a stronger shield against the rising tide of AI-generated investment scams.

“We are adopting proactive mechanisms to protect the integrity of Nigeria’s capital markets.

This is crucial to combating systemic risks and restoring investor confidence,” the Commission stressed.

Social Media Crackdown and Influencer Accountability

Another major dimension of the SEC’s strategy involves tackling fraudulent promotion on social media.

The Commission confirmed that it has engaged social media companies to curb misleading ads that promote unlicensed trading platforms.

In addition, SEC cautioned influencers and bloggers against lending their platforms to these scams.

“Any influencer or digital marketer found complicit in promoting illegal platforms will face regulatory sanctions, including possible prosecution,” the Commission warned.

This move comes amid rising concern that social media influencers, knowingly or unknowingly, help amplify fraudulent schemes by endorsing them to their large audiences.

How Investors Can Stay Protected

While authorities step up surveillance, the SEC emphasized that investors also have a critical role to play in safeguarding their finances.

The Commission urged Nigerians to treat any investment scheme that guarantees daily profits, promises zero risk, or claims celebrity endorsements with suspicion.

“Any investment offering unrealistic returns or backed by manipulated videos of public figures should immediately raise a red flag,” it cautioned.

The Commission encouraged investors to:

Verify the registration status of any platform on the SEC’s official website.

Cross-check that the company’s registration number matches details listed on the SEC portal.

Avoid platforms that operate solely through WhatsApp, Telegram, or social media without a verifiable office address.

Report suspicious activities directly to the SEC via its official email, phone line, or complaints portal.

The Bigger Picture

The warning from the SEC underscores how technology, while transformative, can also be weaponized for fraudulent purposes.

The emergence of AI-generated investment scams reflects a growing global trend where criminals exploit cutting-edge tools to stay ahead of regulators.

For Nigeria, where financial literacy and regulatory awareness are still evolving, the risk is particularly high.

Analysts argue that a mix of technology-driven oversight, public education, and stricter penalties for fraudsters is necessary to safeguard the nation’s capital markets.

As the Commission continues to tighten its oversight, Nigerians are reminded that protecting investments begins with due diligence.

In an age where artificial intelligence can mimic reality almost perfectly, skepticism is no longer optional—it is a survival skill.
