A senior Kremlin official has issued a stark Russian navy seizure threat, warning Western powers they could face Russian naval action if they attempt to seize merchant vessels transporting oil.
Nikolai Patrushev, a close aide to Russian President Vladimir Putin responsible for shipping and national security, said Moscow must send a strong signal to the United Kingdom, France, and Baltic states.
Patrushev described Western interdictions of Russian oil tankers as “piracy-like attacks” and said that unless Russia responds decisively, European nations might attempt to block Russia’s access to key maritime routes.
“The navy is the best guarantor of navigation safety,” he stressed during comments to Moscow’s Argumenty i Fakty newspaper, signaling serious maritime oil shipping tensions.
Russia’s official warning comes amid increasing enforcement of Western sanctions on Russia, targeting the so-called Russian shadow fleet.
This fleet is accused of circumventing restrictions imposed after Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine, allowing continued exports of oil, grain, and fertilizers.
Patrushev argued that the sanctions directly threaten Russia’s economy.
“If we do not resist decisively, the English, the French, and even the Balts will soon be bold enough to attempt sea blockades in the Atlantic Basin,” Patrushev added.
His statement highlights Moscow’s concern over what it perceives as NATO naval pressure near its strategic exclaves and international shipping lanes.
The Russian official said that Western navies were undergoing significant modernisation, reflecting what Moscow described as gunboat diplomacy by Washington, particularly in Venezuela and Iran. In recent months, the US and France have acted against vessels connected to Russia’s shadow fleet. In January, US special forces seized the Marinera, a Russian-flagged oil tanker with links to Venezuela, claiming violations of US sanctions. Moscow condemned the move as illegal under international maritime law.
French authorities also boarded the tanker Grinch, part of Moscow’s network, in the Mediterranean. The vessel, which had departed from Russia, was escorted to a French port near Marseille before being released after a multimillion-euro fine.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot described the seizure as enforcing the high cost of evading European sanctions.
Patrushev warned that Moscow’s response would not be limited to nearby waters.
Russia plans to deploy substantial forces in main maritime areas, including regions far from its territory, to deter Western naval interference with shipping. He emphasized that Russia must protect its right to export essential commodities to sustain its economy.
The Kremlin’s announcement comes amid fears that NATO countries could implement a blockade of Kaliningrad on the Baltic Sea.
Patrushev accused European powers of deliberately escalating tensions to provoke Moscow and said that any peaceful resolution failing would see blockades “broken and eliminated by the navy.”
