Russia uses spy satellites to photograph the US–UK military base on Diego Garcia, Ukraine’s President Zelensky claims, raising serious concerns about cooperation between Moscow and Tehran in Middle East security.

Russia uses spy satellites to track strategic military facilities in the Middle East, including the US–UK base on Diego Garcia. President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that these operations appear to aid Iran’s military planning.

The intelligence reportedly includes imagery of Kuwait International Airport and the Greater Burgan oil field. Zelensky emphasized that this demonstrates the potential for Russian-Iranian coordination against US and allied forces.

Zelensky said Russian satellite reconnaissance also targeted Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia, Shaybah oil and gas fields, Incirlik Air Base in Turkey, and Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar between March 24 and 26.

He highlighted that Ukrainian facilities were not involved, questioning why such intelligence is shared with Iran while sanctions and international oversight are in place. The revelation escalates concerns about regional security.

Iran’s ballistic missile attack on Diego Garcia took place prior to March 24. Two missiles were launched; one failed, and the other was intercepted by the US Navy. The strike illustrates Tehran’s ability to project power far from its borders.

Diego Garcia has emerged as a key strategic site for US and UK military operations. Its location near the Strait of Hormuz makes it critical for monitoring Iranian activity and safeguarding international shipping lanes.

Initially, the UK refused the US permission to conduct strikes against Iran from Diego Garcia. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak later authorized limited US operations after Iranian threats to shipping in the Gulf intensified.

Zelensky’s intelligence disclosure confirms fears of Russian support for Iran, potentially enhancing Tehran’s capacity to target American and allied forces in the region. This also complicates broader NATO and transatlantic security considerations.

The Ministry of Defence previously suggested Russia may have shared intelligence with Iran even before the war in Ukraine escalated. Zelensky’s revelation reinforces these warnings and underscores the risks of satellite reconnaissance misuse.

Satellite imagery of military bases, airfields, and energy facilities allows adversaries to plan attacks with precision. Russia’s collection of this data illustrates its advanced reconnaissance capabilities and the global security implications.

The US Navy released aerial images of Diego Garcia, highlighting key infrastructure. Such sensitive imagery underscores the strategic importance of the base and the potential consequences if intelligence falls into hostile hands.

Zelensky received a detailed briefing on Russian satellite operations, which included imagery from Diego Garcia, Prince Sultan Air Base, Shaybah oil field, Incirlik Air Base, and Al Udeid Air Base.

The implications for regional and global security are substantial. Iran could use this intelligence to conduct precision strikes against US and allied forces, potentially escalating conflict across the Persian Gulf and Middle East.

In response, the UK and US have reinforced security at Diego Garcia and other bases, implementing protective measures to counter possible threats from missiles, drones, and satellite-aided targeting.

Domestically, UK ministers face pressure over fuel duty amid rising petrol prices influenced by Middle Eastern instability. Iranian missile and drone attacks have already impacted energy markets globally.

Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson stated that fuel duty increases are scheduled but no immediate action is required. She reassured drivers that government monitoring will maintain stability during the summer months.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch highlighted the importance of domestic energy production, including North Sea oil and gas, to reduce reliance on imports and mitigate risks caused by geopolitical conflicts.

RAC data indicates petrol prices have risen over 12% since the Ukraine war began, with forecasts suggesting prices may exceed 150p per litre for the first time in nearly two years.

International analysts warn that Russian intelligence sharing with Iran could reshape military dynamics in the Middle East, especially if US, UK, and allied facilities are targeted with enhanced operational planning.

Zelensky emphasized that lifting sanctions on aggressors supplying intelligence to hostile actors could further destabilize global security, underscoring the importance of coordinated international oversight.

The attack on Diego Garcia demonstrates the vulnerability of strategic military installations far from the conflict zone in Ukraine, revealing the global reach of regional actors and satellite-based reconnaissance.

Timing of the Iranian missile strike, coordinated with Russian satellite imagery, indicates deliberate intelligence use to enhance Tehran’s operational effectiveness and plan attacks against allied facilities.

Diego Garcia’s location provides monitoring over the Strait of Hormuz, Gulf of Aden, and surrounding shipping lanes, making its security crucial for US, UK, and allied military operations.

Russian surveillance of energy infrastructure, including Greater Burgan and Shaybah oil fields, raises concerns about potential threats to global energy supply and the importance of safeguarding critical intelligence.

Zelensky also highlighted imagery captured of US Air Force bases hosting allied personnel, including Al Udeid in Qatar, showing how intelligence collection could compromise multinational military cooperation.

NATO and allied forces are reviewing force protection and intelligence-sharing protocols to prevent vulnerabilities exposed by Russian satellite activity and Iranian missile threats.

UK officials continue to coordinate with US counterparts to secure Diego Garcia. Measures include enhanced surveillance, missile defense systems, and counter-intelligence to prevent any disruption from hostile activity.

Russia’s satellite operations for Iran reflect a broader geopolitical strategy to extend influence, challenge Western military operations, and leverage intelligence cooperation to affect regional stability.

Zelensky warned that ignoring Russian-Iranian intelligence cooperation risks emboldening aggressors. Strong deterrence measures and international oversight are essential to prevent escalation that could destabilize multiple regions simultaneously.

Russia uses spy satellites to photograph Diego Garcia for Iran, Zelensky claims, underscoring the risks to US and UK military bases and highlighting broader implications for Middle East and global security.
