Retired DCP Woke killed in horrifying ambush along Port-Harcourt road

Imo Police confirm retired DCP Kingsley Woke was killed in a Ngor Okpala attack as authorities intensify security operations to track abductors and restore calm.

The Imo State Police Command has officially identified the victim of the violent attack that occurred along the busy Port Harcourt Road in Ngor Okpala Local Government Area as retired Deputy Commissioner of Police, DCP Kingsley Woke, aged fifty-six.

His death has triggered widespread concern, not only because of his standing as a senior law enforcement officer but also due to the disturbing pattern of rising insecurity along that corridor, which has unsettled local residents and travelers.

The tragic incident took place on December 7, at a spot near Amala Autonomous Community, an area that has become increasingly notorious for random ambushes by criminal gangs.

A group of armed men suddenly emerged from a thick bush around the Amala axis, shooting indiscriminately at vehicles passing at the time.

Their first target was the driver of a Toyota Highlander Jeep, whom they shot at close range in a coordinated and brutal manner.

Moments later, they forcibly stopped a Lexus RX300 SUV and abducted its occupants before escaping back into the surrounding forest.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama provided a clearer picture of the final moments of the retired senior police officer.

He explained that DCP Woke, who last served as the Deputy Commissioner in charge of Courses at the Police Staff College in Jos, had been travelling from Port Harcourt to Umuahia in Abia State when he encountered the gunmen.

Makama noted that the attackers fired directly into Woke’s vehicle, hitting him in the chest and causing fatal injuries.

The location of the attack, just a short distance after the Zion Ministry Church in the Amala community, has previously been the scene of other criminal incidents—something residents have frequently complained about, calling for stronger security presence.

The deceased officer, who hailed from Omuowu in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, was known among his colleagues as a disciplined professional and a quiet family man.

His death has been described as a painful loss, particularly because he spent his career serving the same society that ultimately failed to offer adequate security at the time he needed it most.

Following the attack, officers from the Ngor Okpala division recovered his personal items, securing them at the station before handing them over to his sister, Mrs. Hope, who tearfully confirmed his passing.

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the Imo State Police Command has intensified search efforts.

According to its spokesperson, SP Henry Okoye, tactical units have been deployed to comb the forests and surrounding communities for clues that could lead to the capture of the assailants.

These units are working closely with other security agencies, including local vigilante groups and traditional hunters familiar with the terrain.

Their mandate is twofold: to track down the killers of DCP Woke and to locate the individuals who were abducted during the attack.

SP Okoye noted that several intelligence-driven strategies have been activated since the incident, stressing that criminal operations along the Ngor Okpala axis will no longer be tolerated.

He added that the joint operations are already yielding promising leads, although no official confirmation of arrests has been made as of the latest update.

Residents, he said, should remain calm and cooperate with law enforcement personnel by providing useful information that could assist the ongoing operations.

The command has also increased patrols along the Port Harcourt–Owerri corridor to strengthen security and deter further attacks.

The killing of a retired Deputy Commissioner of Police has reignited conversations about the rising wave of violent crimes in parts of Imo State.

Community leaders in Ngor Okpala expressed deep worry that criminals have become increasingly bold, attacking even high-profile individuals without fear.

They recalled several previous incidents of robbery, kidnapping, and assault that were reported in the area, calling on the state government and federal authorities to pay closer attention to the deteriorating security situation.

Analysts believe that the attack underscores a broader issue of weakened security architecture across rural and semi-urban highways, where law enforcement presence is often thin.

Some argue that the lack of streetlights, the overgrown vegetation along the roads, and abandoned stretches of land provide convenient cover for criminals.

Others insist that community policing must be strengthened, given the familiarity vigilantes and hunters have with the local landscape.

Meanwhile, tributes have begun pouring in for the late DCP Woke. Former colleagues describe him as a calm but firm officer, committed to training and mentoring younger ranks.

Many recalled his contributions at the Police Staff College, where he helped shape officers who are now serving across different commands.

To them, his death at the hands of armed criminals represents a troubling symbol of the worsening national security challenges.

Families in nearby communities also expressed their fear over the recent escalation of violence in Ngor Okpala.

Several residents shared stories of avoiding the road after sunset, travelling in groups, or taking longer alternative routes simply to feel safe.

They urged both the state government and the police to sustain the current operations until the criminals are apprehended and normalcy is restored.

With the investigation ongoing, SP Okoye reiterated the Imo State Police Command’s determination to bring the attackers to justice.
