Ramadan: Deadly stampede hits Katsina during free food distribution

A stampede at Kofar-Guga quarters in Katsina  State has left at least four people dead and several others injured during the distribution of annual Ramadan alms.

The incident has cast a shadow over the community’s charitable celebrations.

The Katsina State Police confirmed the tragedy through a statement issued by DSP Aliyu Abubakar on Sunday.

The incident occurred on February 26, 2026, around 9 p.m., when a large crowd gathered at the home of a local philanthropist intending to receive alms for Ramadan.

The excitement and sheer number of people quickly escalated into chaos.

Katsina stampede

Police reported that a distress call was sent to the Central Police Station in Katsina about the crowd swelling beyond control.

“The Police Command in Katsina regrets to inform the public of a stampede during the Ramadan alms distribution, which left multiple people injured,” DSP Abubakar said.

Responding immediately, a team of officers rushed to the scene to manage the situation.

Victims were transported to nearby hospitals for urgent medical care.

Despite prompt intervention, four of the injured later died from their injuries, leaving families devastated and the community in mourning.

The Commissioner of Police in Katsina, Mr. Bello Shehu, extended his condolences to the bereaved families and expressed wishes for the recovery of those still hospitalized.

He also confirmed that the police would conduct a detailed investigation into the incident to determine its causes and implement measures to prevent similar occurrences.

“This unfortunate event highlights the importance of organized planning and coordination during public charitable events,” Mr. Shehu stated.

He urged individuals planning to distribute alms to liaise with the police beforehand so adequate security arrangements could be made.

“Our goal is to ensure that charitable acts are carried out safely without endangering lives.”

Eyewitnesses described panic as people surged toward the distribution point, leading to pushing, shoving, and a sudden loss of control.

The stampede left many injured in the chaos, underscoring the need for structured crowd management during popular community events.

Authorities also warned that the risk of such incidents is heightened during Ramadan, when large numbers of residents gather for charitable acts.

Police emphasized that advance notice allows them to deploy personnel effectively, set up crowd control measures, and maintain order during distribution events.

Local residents expressed deep concern over the tragedy and called for stricter planning of alms distribution.

Community leaders stressed that while acts of charity are vital, the safety of recipients must come first.

Many suggested measures such as staggered distribution, designated lines, and medical teams on standby to reduce the risk of accidents.

The stampede has prompted a broader conversation in Katsina about how to manage large gatherings safely.

Experts recommend clear queuing systems, crowd barriers, and proper monitoring to prevent panic situations.

Coordination between organizers, security personnel, and local authorities is essential to ensuring that charitable events remain both generous and safe.

Police continue to support the families of victims and monitor recovery efforts for those injured.

Mr. Shehu reiterated that future alms distribution must be preceded by consultation with the police to guarantee sufficient coverage and reduce the likelihood of stampedes.
