Peter Obi urges Nigerians to protect their voting rights

Former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has declared that electoral integrity must be the defining principle of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections.

Addressing supporters during a political engagement in Akwa Ibom State, Obi stressed that the sanctity of the ballot must be protected and that any official who refuses to properly count votes will face consequences.

Speaking before a lively crowd, Obi emphasized that citizens have a constitutional right to have their votes counted accurately.

According to him, democracy loses its meaning when electoral officials undermine the process.

“In 2027, anyone who refuses to count our votes will also be counted,” he said, drawing loud reactions from the audience.

He explained that the statement was a call for responsibility, not confrontation, underscoring the importance of electoral integrity in sustaining public trust.

Obi used the occasion to encourage Nigerians, particularly young voters, to remain actively involved in the political process.

He argued that participation is essential to strengthening democracy and ensuring that leadership reflects the will of the people.

He noted that the lesson from previous elections is clear: vigilance and accountability are necessary to protect the democratic system.

For him, the future of Nigeria depends largely on safeguarding electoral integrity at every stage of the voting process.

The former governor’s remarks are widely seen as shaped by his experience during the 2023 presidential election.

After leaving the Peoples Democratic Party due to disagreements over its nomination process, Obi contested under the Labour Party platform.

His campaign generated significant national attention, attracting strong support from young Nigerians and urban voters who were drawn to his message of transparency and reform.

Political analysts observe that Obi’s continued advocacy for electoral integrity reflects his broader political philosophy.

Throughout his public life, he has consistently argued for prudent management of public resources, institutional accountability, and transparent governance.

In his view, credible elections form the foundation upon which all other reforms must rest.

Without confidence in the voting system, he maintains, it becomes difficult for citizens to believe in the legitimacy of their leaders.

In December 2025, Obi took another step in his political journey by formally joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The move signaled his intention to remain active in national politics and to pursue his ambitions under a new platform.

Supporters say the shift demonstrates his determination to build alliances capable of delivering meaningful change.

Critics, however, argue that party switches can complicate political consistency.

Nevertheless, Obi insists that his commitment to reform, particularly the defense of electoral integrity, remains unchanged.

During the Akwa Ibom event, Obi also appealed to political actors and institutions to prioritize peaceful conduct ahead of the 2027 elections.

He called on the Independent National Electoral Commission and security agencies to uphold professionalism and fairness.

According to him, a credible process will not only strengthen democracy but also enhance Nigeria’s international reputation.

He reiterated that safeguarding electoral integrity is a shared responsibility that involves voters, political parties, civil society, and government institutions alike.

The event concluded with renewed calls from supporters for transparency and fairness in the coming election cycle.

Many attendees expressed optimism that increased awareness and citizen engagement could help deter irregularities.

Civil society observers present at the gathering echoed similar sentiments, noting that public scrutiny often plays a vital role in improving electoral outcomes.

As preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections, conversations around reforms and accountability are expected to intensify.

Questions about technology deployment, voter education, and dispute resolution mechanisms are already emerging in political discussions.

In this evolving landscape, Obi’s message places electoral integrity at the center of national debate, urging stakeholders to act decisively to protect democratic values.
