Governor Okpebholo champions Edo Development with roads, schools, and urban projects to transform Benin City into a modern, sustainable, and people-centered city.
Governor Monday Okpebholo has reaffirmed that Edo Development remains the top priority of his administration, with a clear focus on executing projects that directly improve the lives of citizens.
Speaking during a tour of ongoing and completed projects in Benin City to mark his one-year anniversary in office, the governor highlighted that his administration is committed to turning the city into a modern and sustainable urban hub.
“Our mission is simple: to develop Edo State and make Benin City a model city where everyone can thrive,” he said.
Governor Okpebholo inspected several key projects that demonstrate the government’s commitment to Edo Development, including:
The Adesuwa Junction Flyover
The 32-kilometre Benin–Sapele Highway
The completed Army Day Secondary School
Internal roads in Ogheghe Community
The 23-kilometre Old Benin–Sapele Road
The Oba Erediauwa Road
The Ekiuwa–Ugbowo Road
The governor personally reviewed construction quality, progress timelines, and the efficiency of contractors. He emphasized that modern roads and bridges are critical for easing traffic, enhancing commerce, and ensuring the smooth flow of people and goods.
“Good roads are the backbone of urban growth and economic activity,” he said. “With these roads, we are not just building infrastructure; we are building the future of Edo.”
At the Army Day Secondary School, Governor Okpebholo announced plans to install off-grid solar power systems in all classrooms. This initiative ensures uninterrupted electricity supply, promotes sustainability, and improves learning environments.
He explained that education is central to Edo Development. “Our children deserve modern schools equipped with energy solutions that support learning and innovation. This is part of building a brighter future for Edo State,” he said.
Security enhancements are also underway, with CCTV cameras and safety measures planned to protect students and staff.
Governor Okpebholo stressed that Edo Development extends beyond roads and schools. Ongoing beautification projects in Benin City aim to create green spaces, landscaped areas, and visually appealing streets that enhance the quality of life.
“We want Benin City to be a place people are proud to visit and live in,” the governor said. “Urban growth and development must include both infrastructure and aesthetic appeal.”
These efforts include tree planting, park renovations, and the development of pedestrian-friendly spaces, reflecting a holistic approach to modern city planning.
Special Adviser on Project Monitoring, Phoebe Williams-Bello, assured that compensation will be provided to landlords affected by the Adesuwa Junction Flyover construction. She emphasized that all projects are closely monitored for quality, timeliness, and accountability.
“Edo Development is about working with integrity, transparency, and fairness,” Williams-Bello said.
This level of monitoring ensures that public funds are efficiently used, and communities are not negatively impacted by the development process.
Governor Okpebholo clarified that his drive for Edo Development is focused on results, not politics. He stressed that his administration works day and night to achieve tangible outcomes, from road construction to educational improvement.
“Even in our sleep, we dream about Edo’s development. Every decision we make revolves around improving the lives of our people,” he said.
Residents have welcomed the ongoing projects, noting that improvements in roads, schools, and public spaces have already made a difference in daily life.
Traders along the Benin–Sapele Highway reported smoother business operations due to reduced traffic congestion. Community leaders praised the governor’s attention to previously neglected areas like Ogheghe Community.
Civil society organizations have also applauded the administration’s commitment to renewable energy in schools and the transparent handling of project monitoring.
